So I've spent most of the day trying to get my laptop to work again.

What I've learned:

-- it's riddled with viruses
-- the USB ports don't work
-- the CD drive doesn't work
-- it won't connect to the internet

I guess I'm officially stuck on the netbook until I can get a new desktop or laptop. Eh, whatever.

The viruses are probably causing your other problems. Do you have an OS disk or a recovery partition? You could reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS, it only takes about half an hour, but you'd lose all your data. Still, better than a total laptop loss!

Oh, yeah, I figure the viruses are my main problem, but I tried reformatting the drive and it still won't recognize it, and I don't have the disk anyway. There's not really anything left on it to worry about losing -- unless you count the first season of Leverage, but I want to get that on DVD anyway -- because I've saved all the files I wanted to save on my netbook. I mean, I really haven't done anything with it since Christmas, so it's like I already lost a laptop anyway.

Aw man, bummer. I hate it when the virii are that bad. :( That SUCKS. At least you got everything off of it, though, and at least you have the netbook! But still, I'm sorry, that really sucks.

On the bright side, now I get to take it apart and poke at the insides. You know, before I drop it out the back window of my apartment to see it smash. :D

(Yes, I'm clearly a five-year-old.)

HEEE! I did that with my old desktop computer once and it was SO SATISFYING (I didn't drop it out the window, just smashed it up).

Can you get it to boot from a CD?

Yeah, that's the drive that doesn't work. That, and the USB ports. And it won't connect to the internet. There's pretty much no way to get anything on the laptop right now.

Ugh. If you could get it to boot from CD, you can pick up a copy of Linux Format at most Borders or Barnes & Nobles. Boot off the Linux CD that comes with the magazine, and you can either install Linux or just reformat the blasted thing.

You are not alone.

My boy is currently performing warranty-voiding surgery on his laptop because one of the cats spilled a warranty-voiding lemonade all. over. it.
