Have we gotten a reason why Michael isn't talking to Dean directly to get his permission to be Michael's vessel? 'Cause Castiel asked Jimmy, and Lucifer talked to Sam, and Dean ... Dean's had to deal with Zachariah, Snotty Maitre D' of the Gilded Cheeseburger Room.
My guess...and it's only speculation on my part...is the reason Michael isn't talking to Dean is because he is Michael, made flesh. Dean's agreeing to let Michael in will flip a switch, sort to speak. And the reason it has always 'had to been Sam' is because of Dean. Sam was chosen for Lucifer's vessel, because Dean is Michael.
Perhaps Michael is doing deep undercover doing recognizance work because he wants to understand mankind better. But now things have hit the fan and the angels are desperate to wake him up.
