Oscarwatch: Inglorious Basterds
Mar. 6th, 2010 09:28 pm-- That was awesome. I would have no problem with that winning Best Picture, although it won't. It'll be Avatar (which would disappoint me for a number of reasons like the casual racism, the bad writing, or the fact that doing exceptionally well in one area of filmmaking like visual effects doesn't make up for being hand-wavingly weak in every other area, at least not in a Best Film category) or The Hurt Locker (which I still have to finish watching but enjoyed so far).
-- That said, Christoph Waltz will win the Oscar because he'll have earned it.
-- That said, now I'm bitter Melanie Laurent wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actress. (Or Best Actress, really, considering.)
-- Now I get why my dad loves this movie. It's right up his alley. (My dad's a sucker for Quentin Tarantino movies, and he said this one is his new favorite.)
-- It took me half of that one scene to figure out that was Mike Myers. I suppose I should be impressed by that.
-- I really wish I still remembered how to speak German. *sigh*

Date: 2010-03-08 07:25 pm (UTC)I think Christoph Waltz was really a lead actor in that film, but I guess it was more of an ensemble piece? He was absolute, sheer genius though. His scenes are a combination of delightful and creepy as fuck. That's impressive. I'm really glad he won! In a great cast, he still managed to completely stand out.
I'm still bitter that Tarantino killed off Fassy, Til, and August in one fell swoop - the basement scene - because they were all amazing. Because you might not have Inglourious obsessives on your flist, Fassy = the British guy pretending to be a Nazi who signalled the number 3 incorrectly, Til = the Nazi-killing German who the Basterds rescued from prison, and August = the actual Nazi (aka "Major Hottie") who fucks with them for a while until realizing the ruse and causing everyone to kill each other. Til's the one who shot off August's balls. THEY ARE ALL SO AMAZING and that scene is beyond phenomenal, but then they are dead. Sad. :(
I agree that Melanie Laurent was fantastic as well and totally deserved a nom.
Now I want to watch it agaaain. Hopefully I will get to soon on my friend's huge flat screen, because glee! :D
