I think it's a cultural thing. it's like we're so damn polite these days that people have no idea where other people's lines are. If you're young and/or obtuse you might never learn how to read body language as "oh bitch you crossed it, but good!" and you merrily go about your offensive way until someone slaps you. I have never been above a loud, verbal, "What the fuck is WRONG with you?" in public. I have occasionally even applied this to people I didn't know. (Lady harassing and insulting employees at Chipotle... I'm talking about YOU. They treated you with more patience and respect than you will ever deserve.)

Public humiliation seems to curb the open mouth insert ass impulses a little. Or they just stop going places with me. Either way, my win!

Also, my parents HAVE made me walk home more than once. It didn't kill me, and having to explain that I wasn't lost or broke down to every car that stopped made an impression. I was 13, and I learned to to repeat things my classmates said, especially if I didn't understand them!

Exactly! I think of two situations that prove your point. One was when Taylor Lautner (or whatever his name is... Jacob) was presented w/ a pair of underpants to sign and the woman who did it assured her daughter "This is okay, it's what happens at these things" and Taylor said, clearly "no it's not". How big of him to stand up for himself to not only an older person, but a fan! Who was operating under a massive misconception and perpetuating it. I might hate those flicks, but I like that kid.
The other is personal: I was like 6 and on vaca, playing by myself at a playground at the camping ground, and this kid who was maybe a year younger than me came over. I started to "play" with him, following him around, shoving him, but not trying to be mean! I was honestly thinking we were playing. This older man, his dad I think, came over and just laid into me, telling me to leave the kid alone, and I looked over and realized the kid was crying. I'd made him cry and had no idea! I was so embarrassed and disappointed in myself. That shit stays with you man. Now I try to be massively aware of how others are reacting to things, because I know that what's playing for some might be bullying, douche baggy behavior for others.

I might have been known for popping my nieces in the mouth for using bad language. They've never been racist, but school environments suck. Of course, I wasn't much more than a teen-ager myself, but I refused to put up with that bullshit in my presence. It was a known thing in the family that "You don't want to make Auntie mad". Of course, I was more than generous in rewarding (or as my sister said, bribing) them for good behavior.

Actually, lately the non-white population's been picking up in town, at least. The going theory from most of the people you ask is that it's people coming from NY and NJ who are taking their UC payments and moving to someplace cheaper to live. Except, you know, expressed in a more winceworthy way.

That said, she lives in Jermyn but went to Lakeland, so basically she lives in town but they shipped her out into Hicksville to douse her in bigotry.
