I live in DC so this stupid rally is obvs huge local news, since it's managed to fuck up every road and train line in the city.

Best moment was probably yesterday when news reporter saw Beck and asked a fairly innocuous question, at which Beck *literally* turned tail and RAN AWAY. Jogging at brisk speed.

'cause, you know, nothin' says "restoring honor" like "running away from the cameras you've courted."

God what a douchebag.

You have no idea how grateful I was when I realized that the Beck rally was this weekend and not next weekend. Not the least of which because my antagonizing ass would have been obligated to find a "This is what a socialist looks like" t-shirt and wear it all weekend long.

Hah. Also, I've yet to see anyone explain what "Restoring Honor" has to do with... raising money for soldiers and their families. The soldiers are already honorable. Raising money for them has ALWAYS been honorable. What in this scenario has lost honor and needs it restored? And what does any of it have to do with "reclaiming the civil rights movement"?

The Warriors Foundation, as a charity, is not and cannot be politically involved, and has specifically requested that no one give political speeches. I don't see how it can possibly be avoided.

I'm following tweeted coverage here. MLK's niece is currently speaking about how "the foundation of marriage is being threatened." What this has to do with veteran's families is a complete mystery.

Ugh. And calling for prayer in school. I don't want my future kids to have their teachers make them beg an invisible man for wishes, but thanks anyway.

It's possible they should call this thing "Restoring the 19th Century" and get it over with.

This made me laugh, sadly.

"Anyone tells you we lost the Vietnam war, you tell them not entirely."

... oh, okay.

What does that even MEAN?

That running away in a bunch of helicopters with your tails between your legs is ... kind of a win?

Yeah, IDEK.

DC-local site TBD.com (the site that used to be our ABC affiliate's page, but now incorporates a lot of smart new-media ideas) is also doing a pretty good job keeping on top of it.

My favorite had to be a Tweet they captured at 9:something this morning: Beck bus for disabled/elderly picks up at RFK stadium metro, where escalators are all broken, no elevator http://twitpic.com/2iz95k

Kinda OT, but do you know if there's anything going on on the Mall next weekend? Hopefully something not nearly as obnoxious?

As far as I know, you're pretty clear next weekend. There are always gatherings, protests, rallies, etc. over by the Capitol but usually they're a few dozen or a few hundred people, not like this weekend's mess.

Do be aware that there's a lot of Metro construction going on next weekend. It theoretically shouldn't have a big effect on you if you're mainly staying in the federal / tourist area, but these things have a way of backing up. Labor Day weekend tends to be the big last hurrah for tourism in DC so you might run into some obnoxious families who don't understand that their kids shouldn't be running into strangers, but I'd rather 400 families like that in my way than one Glenn Beck. ;)

I'm sure there's a snarky comment to be made about bootstraps... but that picture just makes me sad :(

I don't even know what is up with twisting MLK's words to claim that he'd be against other forms of civil rights.

She's the crazy one no one else in the family will talk to. Not kidding here, she's genuinely on the outs with everyone else in the family because they kinda hate her and her creepy beliefs.

Oh but she's black and related to MLK so they're validated now.
Ugh

You know what, though? This is reminding me that the 50th anniversary of "I Have a Dream" is in three short years. *saves up pennies, schedules vacation*

Glenn Beck is no MLK and for him to insinuate he even comes close or to usurp MLK's message to further his own is just not cool. I have stronger words, but I'm trying not to sink low.
