I just want to say this right here and right now, just as a warning.

If, right before the election, they drag Osama bin Ladin out of some nook and cranny and wave him around, all "Look who we caught!", and I'm walking down the street one day only to hear someone genuinely say, "Can you believe they caught bin Ladin? I'm so totally surprised and voting for Bush!"

I am going to beat the ever-lovin' crap out of that person. Not for voting for Bush, but for being an idiot.

Strangely I just had this discussion with my husband. Great minds think alike or maybe we just know how gullable people are.

a) can´t you just beat the crap out of bush, right now?

b) all the more reason to use the internet fandom to search for old ladin.

I really hope that wouldn't be a deciding factor for a vote...it's not like Bush went spelunking himself with a big gun looking for the hairy freak

Heh. Husband and I have ongoing debate as to *how long* before election day ObL will be retrieved from wherever he's hanging out.

My bet was going to be right around the time of the Democratic National Convention, but then I realized that would probably be too early. Now I'm guessing early October or late September, because I'm so totally cynical at this point I'm figuring on them giving the "evildoers" enough time to scrape together a terrorist attack right before the election.

Jesus, I really hope the only reason Bush and Kery are neck-and-neck in the polls is because they're not counting the people like me who've never voted before and are registering this year simply to vote his ass out. *end rant*

Well, I am a Republican and I don't hate Bush particularly (also didn't hate Clinton particularly, and don't get the whole thing), but I agree: They pretty much know where OBL is, and will drag him out--probably after "he's" made a big threat via some untraceable line--and say, "Look... we have him." My vote is close to election, so there's no time to whip up a really good retaliatory scandal in the interim.

The capture of bin Laden certainly won't be accomplished by Bush. It will be accomplished by the men and women on the ground who, you know, actually did it. Anyone who thinks a Democratic president wouldn't have prosecuted the war with equal zeal after 9/11 wasn't paying attention.

Political cynic that I am,

I think the most despicable thing is that this major military occupation of Iraq is most likely going to continue to be dragged out *much* longer than the public was originally led to believe (when the provisional government is supposed to be in place June 30, and one would expect troop withdrawals shortly after that). This long-drawn out occupation is creating a Vietnam-like situation where no decisive "victory" is possible, and allowing all manner of horrible things to continue to happen to both soldiers and foreign civilian workers alike, apparently all just in order to create the right kind of scenarios/circumstances/media buzz for Bin Laden to be "suddenly" captured just before the election to make Bush look like some kind stalwart hero. (And they all the while seem to think that we are all so stupid that we will forget that it is Afghanistan (Bin Laden), not Iraq, who was responsible for 9-11 in the first place.) *And* there is now some speculation that Bush might even order some type of military retalliation against *Syria* for harboring terrorists. Dubbya is the most disgustingly media-manipulative (despite his intellectual shortcomings),and unabashedly war-mongering, coldly hypocritical president we have had in my lifetime. Making things even worse, media pundits seem to suck up & spit out every manipulative muck-raking thing the Bush adminstration churns out about Kerry.

The sad thing is how many Americans actually believe that Iraq and Hussein had something to do with 9/11, according to some of the polls they periodically run. Too damned many watching FOX news and CNN and believing what they're shown or what's implied...

Come on, Michael Moore! Bring out Fahrenheit 911 and drag the Shrub's ass through the muck where more Americans will hear about what he'd really been up to!
