So I was listening the online 80s/90s radio station yesterday at work and I swear, every other song turned into one great big nostalgia 'fest. Let me put it this way ... I think I said, "Oh, my God," and bopped around like an idiot for about ten songs in a row.
In any event, it made me think of music that always made me think of high school without fail. So, just because I'm a little blocked creatively and this is what listening to nostalgic stuff will do to you, these would be the ten songs that always flash me right back to high school ...
1. "Open Arms," Journey -- Yes, as I was in high school in the early nineties, this was most definitely before my time. But this, for all its remarkable cheese-itude, was our prom song. Now, I say this makes me nostalgic for high school and that it was our prom song before I even bother to mention that I didn't go to my prom. These days, I would be in a dress and going stag in a heartbeat, but back then, I was ... well, a chicken. I might have gone stag if everybody else had, but when everybody else has a date but you, it's a little intimidating.
2. "Freebird," Lynyrd Skynyrd -- Our class song was "Sky Blue Black," by Jackson Browne, a song I have heard exactly twice in my lifetime. Once when my English teacher lobbied her classes to vote for it for class song, and once when we walked down the aisle after graduation. God only knows why it ended up as class song (okay, more people voted for it, but whatever), but "Freebird" came in a close second, and, well, I hear it more. So there.
3. "No Rain," Blind Melon -- You know how I didn't go to the prom? Yeah, well, I was kinda on the prom committee. The reason I remember this song is because I get this visual of me and four other people who'd gone to check out a place for the prom together belting it out at the top of our lungs as we drove back to school. It's just a nice little memory.
4. "November Rain," Guns N Roses -- Three of my best friends lived within two blocks of me, so we inevitably spent the entire summer (before we all got licenses) hanging out together. And since my parents' garage had a playroom with a pool table on the second floor, we usually hung out up there. I can totally remember this song playing on the radio one summer all the time while we hung out and played pool.
5. "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana -- Dude, it was the early nineties. What do you expect? Besides, everybody I knew was hugely into grunge. Heck,
ibanezaxe and two of my other friends had a Nirvana cover band. "Polly" and "Lithium" give the same comfy feelings, too.
6. "Love is on the Way," Saigon Kick -- Out of all of the slow songs I can remember dancing to with guys in high school, I have to remember this one? Thanks, God. Really. (Not that I did all that much slow dancing back then. I didn't date all that much, although looking back on it, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I was the chick everybody thought was going to turn out to be a lesbian and I just didn't know it. Not for any substantial reason like, you know, being attracted to girls, but for oh-so-important high-school reasons like having short hair and being uncomfortable around hot guys. Never mind that I wanted to jump about half of the guys in my class, and probably could name a couple I'd jump right now if they walked into the room.)
7. "Blister In the Sun," Violent Femmes -- Hee ... I can remember getting a tape of the Violent Femmes off of somebody and wearing it the fuck out. I can also remember killing time during poetry critiques with Violent Femmes lyrics. Our creative writing teacher used to pass out copies of the poem that was getting critiqued, and we'd make notes and hand all of the copies back to the author. I made a habit out of trying to write entire songs down on my copy, chorus and all.
8. "Good Vibrations," Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch -- This song always makes me remember going to my friend Jen's house before school and meeting up with her so we could walk or ride there together. When she had this CD, I think we listened to it every single morning.
9. "Groove is in the Heart," Dee-Lite -- God, I loved this song. It was just such dorky fun. And I think they played it at every single dance from the time it was popular until the end of high school.
10. "Blame It on The Rain," Milli Vanilli -- I think I mentioned once before that my English teacher loved these guys to pieces when they were popular, then kind of went into mourning when they got caught lip-synching. Her whole fangirl reaction to it was really hard to forget, but in a good way.

Date: 2004-05-22 07:12 pm (UTC)It's always a nice little shock when I run into people I graduated with and ... huh. I just realized as I was typing this that every time I've run into a guy I graduated with, they've made a point of giving me a hug. Hee. That's a nice pick-me-up.
