Right there with you. I don't have kids (and probably won't), but I was brought up that seeing movies in theatres w/o a babysitter is a special lucky priviledge for a parent.

With a young kid, you have three choices: You either hire a sitter, you don't go in the first place, or you go and see whatever parts of the movie might happen when the kid is quiet/asleep. One parent sits on the asile and the moment the kid starts fussing they're up and outside until s/he's quiet again. You can trade off if you like, but that's the deal.

My parents were pretty broke at the time and skipped the sitter when they could, but would never have put their desire to see the movie above either their kid's welfare or the right of the other people to watch in peace. They always said that they considered seeing theater movies in irregular chunks every other time to be like changing diapers and staying up nights -- simply one of the un-fun (and non-negotiable) sacrifices of being a parent.

And they were raising us well before VCRs or DVDs, for crying out loud. What are today's parents' excuses? They can't wait 6mos for the DVD? They can't pay some local teen $20 to sit for the evening?

Idiots.
