The only thing I dislike about this box office story is this moronic quote regarding Catwoman's repugnant opening weekend:

... Degarabedian theorized, "Boys like to see the word 'man', not 'woman'," in their action flicks.

No, you idiot, it's not "man" or "woman" boys dislike in their action flicks, it's "obvious, mind-numbing crap". Then again, you could be right. Maybe guys don't like tough women in their action flicks, which is why Kill Bill, Terminator 2, the Alien movies, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon didn't make any goddamn money.

EDIT: I'm torn between writing my [livejournal.com profile] ithurtsmybrain fic tonight or reviewing Dante's Peak. Urgh.

OBSESSIVE EX-BOYFRIEND OF EDIT: You know, I saw The Bourne Supremacy today and would have written a review for it, but I can pretty much sum it up by saying it's five million times better than Catwoman and I still would pick Matt Damon over Ben Affleck in a heartbeat. And you know what? First exercise, then write.

LOUD-MOUTHED BEAUTY CONSULTANT OF EDIT: The more time that passes, the more I love my new haircut.

INSANE DANCE INSTRUCTOR OF EDIT: "Because We Can" from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack is one of the best songs to exercise to, but sweet Jesus in jockey shorts, is it exhausting to keep up with. *collapses* (My problem is that my idea of exercise basically involves a couple hundred stomach crunches followed by putting headphones on and dancing and/or exercising to music for a half hour or so, and when I put on that song, I feel obligated to basically do a can-can type thingy. I suppose it'd be less embarrassing if I had the right costume and three other dancing girls ... but then again perhaps not. Oh, well, fifteen more minutes to go.)

Tell me about it. God knows women never go to action movies, and there can't possibly exist women like me who consider action movies their favorite genre. *eye roll*

Plus, I mean, if "boys" don't wanna see "woman" in a movie title, then boys are stupid, right? Is all I'm sayin'. :P And it's even stupider for a bigger, influential movie BOY to pander to it. :D

I bet you have learned the kung fu from all your action movie watching.

You know, it's sad. All the action movies I've watched, and I can only throw a good punch because I once watched a Tae Bo tape. (Not that I'm about to test out my punching abilities, but still.)

Dante's Peak! Dante's Peak!

I rented that just a couple of weeks ago so that I could watch my state get blown up Real Good.

Hmph. My state never gets blown up Real Good. People do tend to get stranded in Pennsylvania without any means of escape more often than not, though. That's actually pretty realistic, come to think of it.

They tried to pretend the setting was Washington, but they're not going to steal the title of Land of Acid Rivers from us, nosiree.

I always pretend that Tremors is set in Texas so that I can watch people be eaten by giant LOCAL rockworms o' doom.

I suppose most Hollywood producers still think that women are useless in action films unless the "action" is confined between the sheets.

Personally, I like films that have both women and men in equally strong roles. Is that so strange?

Ooo, cool! Now I have something to do later on tonight. ;) (But not until I get my work done, which I say in a responsible voice that makes it sound like I'm getting paid for either piece of writing I plan to do tonight. Sheesh.)

The interesting thing about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was was that it wasn't until a few hours after it was over that I had the thought "Hey, you know, the main character in this was female, the main villain in this was female, the last prolonged fight was between two females, and of the four main martial-artsy characters (protagonist, her two new mentors, and her old villain mentor), three were female. And the sex object of the film was a guy living in a cave with long hair that cooks and sings."

It was, like, I didn't automatically classify it as an "action-chick film", the same way I wouldn't automatically classify Bourne Supremacy as an "action-man film". They were both just action films.

I'd like to see more movies where having the lead kick-ass-ers be female is just as much a normnative as having them be male. I'd like to see movies where there might be more female or male, but the spread over the genre evens out to be about equal so I don't have to waste my time thinking about how unfair it is that it's not equal, and the movies are all so good that being mostly male or female doesn't matter. Now, that only applies to male-led action films. If it's good or bad, it's because it's good or bad. If a female action film is good or bad, it must have something to do with the fact that the lead is female, therefor the film is abnormal and weird and risky and deserves the criticism if it's not prepared to be friggin' Kill Bill or Alien.
