Sep. 14th, 2004 11:08 pmYeah, about that apoca-fic community ...
So here's what I had in mind.
First off, the apocalypse itself. Whatever it would be would have to be as realistic as possible, i.e. without magical interference. Sure, it'd be really easy to just have Wolfram and Hart or some other fanon group of villians pull something huge, but for fandoms based in reality who'd much rather write fic based in reality, it's so much easier to avoid the more sci-fi/fantasy fandoms if the planet gets nuked or Captain Trips infects everyone or whatever.
Also, whatever it was, while a plague in the vein of The Stand could work, it might just be better to pick a date and a time and have something huge happen. Example -- on July 24, 2004 at 6:18 p.m., the planet gets nuked and Judgment Day arrives. (Yes, I stole the date from Terminator 3. Who's shocked?) This way, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to establish a set date for Armageddon across fandom lines.
The whole setup could be that once the apocalypse comes, all bets are off. You can kill anybody, send your characters anywhere, or have any magical whozits happen that you want, as long as it followed current canon. (For example, Richie Ryan or Tara Maclay cannot be alive in your story. They dead in canon, they dead in fic. If you want non-magical folks to wander into a fantasy canon (ex., the doctors from ER running into the characters from Charmed), that's fine, but if you have the cast of CSI and want to avoid the magical stuff, that's okay, too.
Now, here's where it gets a wee tricky. If you want to call dibs on one or more fandom, that's perfectly okay. The more fic, the better, don't you think? Although, I think it might be better for some fandoms if writers are kept to a minimum. (Example -- You cannot have the entire Buffyverse, but you can call dibs on the L.A. crew, or just Angel and Spike, or just Illyria, or whatever.) That being said, since it'd be like one huge story, you'd have to keep in mind what was going on in the story of the writer who had Methos if you have Duncan MacLeod, so that Joe Dawson can't be dead in Paris in one storyline and alive in Seacouver in the other.
This brings up the concept of writers working together on something. Obviously, if you had, say, the characters from Joan of Arcadia and just wanted to work with them, that'd be cool, but if you wanted to have them run into Bobby Drake and Jubilee, you'd have to either ask permission of the writer who had dibs on them (just in case they were planning a plotline with them being elsewhere at the time) or work with the other writer on the story. You know, like a great big playdate. :) This way, if you had the Terminator characters and wanted to crossover with Jake 2.0 one week, then hike over to San Francisco to crossover with Monk the next, it's entirely possible. (Hell, the more crossovers, the more fun this'll be. *maniacal cackle*)
You could always get rid of your dibs once you got done with a plotline. Like if you call dibs on Labyrinth just long enough to write a Sarah/Jareth ficlet, then toss them back into the pot so someone else could write a new storyline for them. Of course, with that in mind, whatever fanfiction had already been written for them in the course of the community would have to be considered canon. If someone tossed Spike and Xander back into the pot after a fic and you took them for a story, they couldn't start off the story sniping at each other as usual if the last story featured heavy-duty slashy smut between the two of them.
As for a community name, I already set up
dead_earth as the community account, although it has no official name, no real userinfo, and no icon. But then again, I just got home, and I've been typing up this. ;) And if anybody else wants to be a mod, help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! *squeak*
If anybody has any other suggestions, now's the time to toss them out there. Like I said, what I'd love for it to read like is one big fanfic rather than a bunch of separate ones. (Yup, just like The Stand, with scattered groups of survivors running into one another occasionally, or hooking up for extended periods of time ... you know, whatever works.)
Eeek. This is going to be sooooooo cool. (And hopefully, everybody will do a whole lot of different fandoms 'cause that would just rock. Okay, so maybe I'm not all that articulate right now, but either I'm really excited or the Bawls is kicking in.)

Date: 2004-09-14 08:21 pm (UTC)Setting this up shouldn't take too long (God willing). And as for writing fic, I'm only going to call dibs on a couple of small fandoms for myself and then hold off at least until the end of the month to start anything.

You know, just yesterday? I was thinking A massive AU post-apocalyptic multi-fandom ficathon type thing would be really, really nifty.

Date: 2004-09-14 09:22 pm (UTC)id be willing to help mod if you need it.
and heres my take on this, as my brain is moving too fast right now.
we will need to know, sorta like in Day After Tomorrow, what the big thing is, and some of the effects, like tidal waves, flooding, earthquakes, people freezing to death, etc.
we also need location ideas. where is the major stuff happening? if LA is underwater, we need to know. that way, any fandom set there can write water/flooding fic instead of rain of toads.
oh wow. this is going to eat my soul, isnt it? i have tons of ideas. questions. irritating remarks.
time to play! gimme!

Date: 2004-09-15 01:26 am (UTC)And a few ideas - a timeline of STUFF THAT WILL HAPPEN -
Forexample if theres a nuclear war then where was hit, in what order, and which areas will become uninhabitable...
Also it might be cool to schedule a Big Event every month or two that people would have to reflect somehow in their fic, just to keep the whole thing flowing as one universe. There could even be perhaps people signed up to write parts of the big event... or not.
And perhaps a Big Bad could be created who could be featured in cameos and appearances in everybody's fic if they wanted but not harmed or anything. Sort of a NPC who could be seen and heard from but woul;d always be guaranteed a get out of trouble and not defeatable card, until you decide to trash him or her. If this story gets to a year then maybe there could be a all-fandoms story crossover challenge so everyone writes a piece, a chapter of a crossover... and then you set up the next year in this shared world...
Also, there need to be groundrules about what can and cant be assumed: for example, is it set in the now? And what callamities are allowed to be sconsidered cannon? Can someone say Armageddon(the Movie) happenned? And the destruction of Sunnydale in Buffy? And can fics set in the future have time travel to come back to the present?
Ok a lot of ideas and questions there so I'll jump away now, but I am very excited about this!

I like the big time line idea someone mentioned above. I like the idea of the interconnection between the various fandoms to maintain character continuity.
This sounds like fun!

Date: 2004-09-15 04:13 am (UTC)I think what canon counts is going to depend on who calls which fandom. I mean, Armageddon would only count if someone called it in the first round, 'cause afterwards, it'd be a little tricky do. 'Cause with characters from different cities, you can say, "Oh, I heard about your zombie problem," but you can't just come along and have a bunch of characters go, "What, you don't remember that massive asteroid that hit?" I think there may be some fandoms I'm going to have to turn down, although I'd hope someone would be able to understand that no, Deep Impact might not really work as a fandom if we're doing an asteroid hitting Earth.
I'm also hoping establishing the date of it will help with the ground rules. I was thinking it probably should be set in now, with characters in the future either having to deal with its far-reaching effects then or having to come back to the now and face it. And if you set up the date of the apocalypse as this week, Sunnydale would have to be destroyed, with the gang divvied up between L.A., Italy, and wherever else they are (which would actually help divvy up writers).
