"Jumping the shark" is a term referring to the exact moment when a long running series, usually TV, sells out & loses relevancy. It originated with Happy Days in an episode where the whole gang went to Hawaii and in one scene, the Fonz is water-skiing and, to show just how cool he is, jumps over a shark. Anyone who has seen that scene knows that the show had just stopped being about story and started being about gimmicks.
