Oct. 13th, 2004 08:47 pmI'm going to be on the bus during much of the debate, and it's not like I have a TV anyway, so if anybody wants to comment in this post to say, "WTF?! What did Dubya/Kerry just say?!", that'd be nice. And, I imagine, pretty cathartic. :)

He keeps chuckling and smirking, and sneering whenever Kerry skewers him.

Me: BUT IT DOESN'T COUNT IF YOU USE THEM STUPIDLY! AAAAAAAAAAAUGGGHHHH!

Date: 2004-10-13 06:34 pm (UTC)Bush: "I don't know. Tolerance blah blah protect the sanctity of marriage. We want everyone involved in the process of defining this, not just a judge."
Kerry: "We're all God's children. It's not a choice. Marriage is between a man and a woman, but you can't discriminate."
Mod: Is pro-choice right?
Kerry: I can't impose my own beliefs on other people, even though I think abortion is wrong.
Bush: All lives should be protected. We should have a law to reduce the number of abortions. I'm going to talk about a bunch of things that I think would reduce the number of abortions, but not mention outlawing abortion.
Me? Biased? Noooo.
Again: Kerry=grownup. Bush=eight-year-old Beavis.

Date: 2004-10-13 07:00 pm (UTC). . . you were just WAITING to work that in there, weren'cha? And we were talking about minimum wage, too . . .
Oh, and Bush manages to talk about the No Child Left Behind Act during an ostensible question on minimum wage. You know what I learned in school? To answer the question that was asked.

Also, Bush blah blah blah reduce abortions blah blah NEVER TALKS ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL PROGRAMS. No. Abstinence programs are what he encourages, as if those solve...everything.

Bush: Minimum wage ... uh ... education! We need to educate better people. I mean, people better! Yeah!

Date: 2004-10-14 12:42 am (UTC)Raising minimum wage means that people who are homeless or live in their cars, cheap motels, etc, can afford to spend the money on rent.
Raising minimum wage would mean that I wouldn't have to chose between eating real food and buying books for school.
Better educated students getting higher paying jobs, if they can afford to go to college. Raising minimum wage means that maybe their parents can afford to set aside some money so those kids can go to college without having loans out the wazoo.

Date: 2004-10-13 07:30 pm (UTC)Best line of the night was Kerry in response to the "Is homosexuality a choice?" question that was asked of Bush. He said "We are all God's children. I'm sure that if you ask Dick Cheney's daughter... she's a lesbian... she will tell you that she is being the person she was born to be..."

Date: 2004-10-14 12:09 am (UTC)After Kerry's speech involving his personal religious views in contrast to presidential duties, everyone watching simultaneously said, "nice" or "awesome..." Dude next to me emphasized with a further, "That was 2 minutes well spent."
Did anybody notice Bush's evil cackle? It caught us ALL off guard. We were like, what was THAT?
Kerry: "The only reason the number of Pell grants went up is because more people are poor and therefore qualify!"
Us: "Ouch..."
Bush: "There are more minority homeowners now than ever before!"
Me: "That's because there are more minorities here than ever before."
Dude next to me: "They're coming in 8000 at a time!"
If there was any criticism of Kerry, however, it would be that he pushed the rich people tax cut thing a little bit far. He stretched it a bit, although not as much as Bush and his education crap.
Oh yeah, and that comment Bush made?! "Kids whose parents don't speak English are just being shuffled through the education system without learning anything!"
Oh. Dear. What kind of a statement is that?! Just because your MOM doesn't speak English, that means that you can't either? "I'm uneducated because my PARENTS are uneducated." What a stupid generalization. Almost every second generation child speaks English much better than their parents. Just because a parent doesn't speak English doesn't mean a kid doesn't or won't ever be able to learn because having foreign parents is a DISABILITY. Why didn't all the stupid Englishmen just come so many years ago and learn the Native American speech?! Does that mean they're uneducated, because they don't know the native language? What kind of horrible generalization is that?
*fumes*
Re: Extracted from my LJ entry for today
Date: 2004-10-14 06:34 pm (UTC)You know, I think it was actually "Kids whose parents won't speak English," which is even more outrageously fucked up. I was listening in the car as I drove home for Fall Break, and I kept screaming curse words at the radio, in a way that made me really happy I didn't have a passenger...

Date: 2004-10-14 06:06 am (UTC)KERRY: Being lectured by the president on fiscal responsibility is a little bit like Tony Soprano talking to me about law and order in this country.
My boyfriend and I looked at each other and started laughing.
However, something said later got me a little steamed:
They were talking about minmimum wage, employment and money.
KERRY: We also need to hold on to equal pay. Women work for 76 cents on the dollar for the same work that men do.
BUSH: But let me talk about what's really important for the worker you're referring to, and that's to make sure the education system works, it's to make sure we raise standards.
Me: Wha?!! *fumes*
Boyfriend: Sweetie, he just said that you don't make as much as men do because you're dumb and don't meet the standards.
I was pissed because instead of answering the question he did what he has been doing, changes direction and goes off on something else.

Yeah; Bush seemed to use education as a solution for everything. (Like, say, losing your job because it was outsourced overseas? not a problem, because now you have time to go to community college! or something like that.) About the same place you did, I had a Revelation: obviously, the reason I don't have a job is because I need to go to community college. (A bachelor's degree from Stanford isn't good enough, y'know. Me is stoopid without teh comunawhatist collage.)
