Veteran Sues After Being Called Up For Duty -- If you don't want me to think a draft is coming, then don't pull shit like this. That man has been out of the military for thirteen years. He is a civilian. If they call him up, it is not a backdoor draft, it's a freaking draft.

Bush strategist Karl Rove takes victory lap after election win -- Shut up, Karl Rove. *seethes*

Parishioners Lock Church to Back Gun-Toting Priest -- Angry parishioners chained shut a church in central Mexico on Friday in protest at the firing of their priest, whose habit of tucking a gun under his robes has earned him fame and the nickname "Padre Pistolas." And this movie hasn't been made yet ... why, exactly?

Read a book, get oral sex? -- And everybody in high school thought the bookworms weren't worth nailing. *eg*

Santa Claus Can't Get a Flu Shot -- Uh, call me crazy, but unless you want a fat, bearded Typhoid Mary on your hands, wouldn't it be a good idea to give a flu shot to the guy who's going to be in contact with hundreds if not thousands of small children over the holidays? Just a thought.

And now for movie trailer links ...

Cars -- Pixar's newest. Eh, not bad. I guess. (I'm not a big car person anyway, so ...)

Spanglish -- This is either going to be really good, or it's really going to suck. It's just one of those movies that you can tell could go either way.

Ocean's Twelve -- You know, half of the fun of these movies is that it looks like they just showed up one weekend, had a few drinks, and filmed a movie. I'm just saying. :)

Regarding #1; anyone who's enlisted can be recalled for active duty at ANY time, regardless of whether they were discharged or not.

There's an interesting thread going on about it in [livejournal.com profile] ginmar's lj.

Now how did I manage to misread that as "Bush Gets Victory Lap Dance At Ground Zero" ?

When I was honorably discharged from the Army, I was automatically entered into 10 years of "Inactive Reserve Status." Which meant that any time during those 10 years, if the government needed me it could call me back.

I was told that when I got out of the Army. And it was part of the discharge papers too. I'm guessing that the same was probably true of that guy.

I'm not saying it's right for the Government to recall him - I'm only saying that it probably was part of his discharge papers.

But he's out of his Inactive Duty period, that's the point.

I was on active duty for three years, followed by about five years on Inactive Ready Reserve. Combined, those two time frames and my time in the Delayed Entry Program comprise the time span of my eight year contract. Back in March, I was given (mailed) my Honorable Discharge certificate, along with a memo with a little additional info. Quoting the memo: "As you no longer have any military status, your records are no longer held by the Army."

If his circumstances are even remotely like that, then I don't blame him one bit for suing them. Especially with them calling him back after thirteen years...

lessons:
1) read the fine print.
2) it's your tax money at work.
3) reading is fun-da-mental.
4) will Brad Pitt be in Padre Pistolas?
5) how can you do all this and work on both novels at the same time? (word count:583/50,000) *grabs another kleenex, weeping noisily for self*

I got confused reading the first headline. I kept thinking, "Veteran Sues? Are those like Mary Sues that have been used over and over in the same fandom?" And then I finally got it.

If you don't want me to think a draft is coming, then don't pull shit like this.

Daddy!Bush said, "Read my lips! No new taxes!" Then he raised taxes quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure if God tells Bush-baby that more bodies are needed to be sacrificed on the altar of folly, he will cheerfully institute a Holy Draft. Which makes me glad I never had kids when I was in my 20's, as they'd be just about the right age to be drafted at this point.

I think there should probably be a category for "is in contact with more than X children regularly during flu season", myself. Daycare workers, teachers, and Santa would probably fit in that. It would be the sensible thing to do.
