You know, I keep stopping Lost to peek at Wife Swap, where they switched a conservative Republican wife with a lesbian partner. And the conservative Republican is officially the most revolting wife I've ever seen on there, based almost entirely on her idiotic level of condescencion. And I could understand her not liking gays because of her religious beliefs which ... okay, whatever, but she is seriously taking her bigotry to a disgusting level.

I'm intrigued. I may have to watch that tonight.

It's on right now. And it's severely pissing me off, because the husband is actually giving this a chance and the wife is just being a total bastard.

Oh, you should see her now. At the end of the episode, both couples get to meet and share ideas. And the conservative mom basically told the lesbian couple that they were depraved and only "shacking up." I haven't wanted to hit someone so much in a long time.

I heard the promos for that on my way into work this morning. The "republican wife" (at least in the promo) seemed intent only on putting the lesbian wife down. It made me sick. I wondered if the "republican husband" was any less of a bigot, I sure hope so ...

I didn't watch it however, shows like that just tend to make me angry.

Why, in a world where an advertisement for a church that wanted to say they welcome everyone was considered "too controversial", is programming like this acceptable???

The Republican husband was actually giving the lesbian mom a change until the couples got back together to swap ideas, and then he basically buckled as his wife threw insults at the lesbians. *seethes*

Then I'm glad I didn't watch ... it would have pissed me off entirely too much.

What's so hard about "live and let live"?

The show is actually really good. And I'm glad they aired this episode, because it made me angry & it also made me proud. The lesbian couple was loving & friendly -- and the conservative Republican woman was hateful & horrible. It's something that isn't being shown enough in the media nowadays.

Oh, yes. As ugly as it was to watch, at least her hateful behavior is being displayed on television next to the lesbian couple's good behavior.

I usually don't watch Wife Swap but I thought I'd give it a try tonight thinking it would be funny. I only made it through about 2 minutes before I wanted to KILL the GOP wife. WTF! SHE was calling the lesbian couple bigots because they wanted to raise their child in an atmosphere of tolerance. And then she said that they were trying to "program" their child to be gay/lesbian. I had to quit watching before my head exploded.

Didn't you hear? Tolerance is the new bigotry.

I know. And she's in an interracial marriage, for crying out loud. You'd think she'd be a little more accepting.

What a bitch on wheels. That woman needs a new definition of "upright and nobel," calling someone a sexual predator because she's a lesbian. Someone needs to remind her that at one point in time her union with her husband was considered by conservative christians to be "immoral and depraved." And then she's surprized that she made her cry, and tries to backpedal!

It's like a traffic accident. I told myself I wouldn't watch, and now I can't look away.

What I wanted to say to her when I saw the preview was that it wasn't too long ago that people thought interracial marriage was sick and unnatural, too.

I was really disappointed that neither one of the lesbians pointed that out. (Then again, maybe they did and I just missed it. In which case, yay, lesbians!)

according to the synopses I read in the paper earlier, she did point that out. I don't know how the bitch took it, though. :\

can I get a cliff's notes version of wife swap? I truely couldn't bring myself to watch it, but am extremely curious how it turned out.

Lesbian partner swaps with conservative wife. Conservative husband says he doesn't agree with the lifestyle, but will give it a chance. Conservative husband then proceeds to work with lesbian partner and even go for dance lessons at a gay bar.

Conservative wife, meanwhile, tells other lesbian partner that their lifestyle is fake and depraved, that they're raising their daughter in a sick environment, and that they're just shacking up. Lesbian partner displays more fortitude than I ever could have by not beating her to death in her sleep with a frozen trout.

Both couples meet up to discuss what happened. Conservative wife immediately tells the lesbian couple every painful insult you can think of and even some I'll be scrubbing out of my brain for weeks, then tries stupidly to backpedal when lesbian partner bursts into tears and asks how the conservative wife can be that cruel.

yep. glad I didn't watch. :(
and on some level, I'm even angry that the TV station would even air it. Hate messages targeting a specific culture and all...
oy.

Actually, it was probably brave of them to air it. We got to see a side of conservative Republicans that is so often glossed over in the media. Strip all the layers of makeup & money away & that woman was just a horrible horrible person ... and the nation got to see how people like her think & act.

Forget compassionate conservatism -- this woman flung every possible insult & insinuation at this perfectly nice lesbian couple, at one point even comparing the lesbian who swapped to a sexual predator she didn't want near her children. That is the real face of conservative thinking -- it's like looking behind the Wizard's curtain to find a horrible little woman behind the hate.

My worry is that thre's a good number of people in this country who think she's perfectly correct in all the things she said, and see nothing wrong with her behavior. For every one of us who saw her as an evil person, I wonder if there wasn't someone else shouting "Amen!" at the tv. :(

Date: 2005-02-10 04:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] maechi.livejournal.com
Well, if they shouted 'Amen!', they were already beyond any saving. She was that horrible. I mean, I don't think anyone with any sense of compassion or morality would think that she was right in what she did & said. She may call herself a Christian, but there was nothing Christ-like in her actions & that was clearly evident.

And did you see the way she was questioning her kids when she got home? It was like she wanted one to break down and wail, "Molestation!" when all three of them were like, "She was really cool." Bah.

Date: 2005-02-10 04:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] maechi.livejournal.com
Yeah. And that whole 'She wasn't too weird?' thing made my blood boil. I really hope that those kids took something away from this experience -- that, despite what their parents & their Church tells them, gays & lesbians are just regular people -- not deserving of hate or discrimination. But I have a feeling that they got drilled & brainwashed again after the cameras left.

I'm glad they did, because quite frankly, the lesbian couple looked almost like saints compared to that woman. It certainly made her arguments look flimsy and stupid.

that's a relief then. Good. :)

Ugh. I watched it and was nauseous. That wife was so disgusting.

It's crazy, too, because she herself is in an interracial marriage... something that conservatives used to be against not that long ago because the Bible supposedly dictated that it was wrong. Hypocrite much?

The mom who stayed with the Republican family was so kickass though-- those kids needed to have some fun.

Oh, and more ranting about the conservative wife: I hated that she tried to pull the whole "my oppression is bigger than your oppression" card. It's such bullshit. Not to mention that I doubt she's faced the same discrimination as most other people of color, considering that she herself is so upper-class status.

And she was so trying to look like a twin of Condi Rice. It was frightening.

I'd seen the promos for this episode, but I didn't watch because I knew it would just make me infuriated.

Really, I wanted to reach inside my tv and bitch slap her just from the commercials.

Randomly bopping in here, but if you do find a torrent, would you mind directing me to it? I think I'd like to see this episode now, but my usual torrent place doesn't carry the show.

Thanks!

I don't think any of them are. I've searched about five different torrent sites with no joy, but if I find it, I shall let you know.
