Ways in which the Creative Zen I just picked up is already better than an iPod, and I haven't even done anything with it yet --

-- I spent $260 bucks on a 40-gig Zen, which is $240 less than I would have spent on an iPod.
-- It's got a removable battery, so this way, if it runs out, I can just go to Best Buy and pick up another one.
-- It comes with a leather carrying case. (Hear that, Apple? And it doesn't get scratches straight out of the box like it's made out of butter and Play-Doh, either!)
-- It smells like new mp3 player.

Oh, please, please live up to my current state of raptute when I actually turn you on and upload songs onto you tonight. *cuddles*

Please tell me Apple is not charging $500 for iPods. That's disgusting.

I'm pretty sure the 40 gig ones are $500. Or I was looking at the wrong pricetag and they were the $400 ones, in which case ... well, it's still more expensive.

I suddenly feel less badly for coveting $300 purses.

Are they Mac-compatible?

Hm. Can you also store files on it? I've heard that an iPod also works well as a portable hard drive.

I have a Zen and it is fucking awesome. Cheap, compatible with macs (as far as I know) and yes, it stores other files, too.

You don't even have to wait to put music on it - it already has a few bits of Chopin, Bizet, etc.

Yes, I'm currently loving mine too. I'd heard a few quibbles about the touchpad but I've already got used to it, so that's not going to be a problem.

And it's so cute and shiny!

I had an Archos jukebox most of last year. Only cost $150 for a 20 gig hard drive.

Suddenly died a few days ago when I went to plug it in. Worst piece of electronics I have ever owned. Ever.

Hopefully the Zen's don't have those issues.

I thought about gettinga replacemtn, but my Axim pretty much took over for me.

and it plays wmv files. and mp3 - no mpeg4, no itunes interface either...

My understanding is that the major Apple advantage is the usable interface (and the ability to hook it into iTunes)...

Dude, I was eyeing that one just last night at Best Buy! Unfortunately, I have a Mac, which means it's not compatible with my computer. Ah well, me and my iPod are happy together; and I figured, you know, I've only got a little over five gigs of music, and I don't tend to increase my collection all that quickly, so I won't need the extra twenty gigs for another few years. *grins*

Is it? It didn't say anything about OSX on the box -- just Windows. Huh. Could be worth pursuing, I suppose.

Go non-iPod methods of music storage!! Kudos to you for not buying into the evil Mac fad. I for one, hate ituns and the iPod interface - it goes completely against the ways I listen to music - finding a single song is a pain in the arse, and god help you if you got mp3s from the days of napster and the tags aren't right.

I got a new mini-disc player over christmas, which I adore - and it record-syncs automatically from MP3s on my computer, so yay.

Boo iPods! Up with Creative Zen and alternate mp3 purveyors!

The 4G 40GB ones are $400, unless you're looking at an iPod Photo.

Although thanks to a brief loophole in Radio Shack's policy, my mom managed to score a discount on hers!

Does it mount itself as a drive, or do you have to go through the Jukebox Player interface thingy like you had to with the old Nomads?

Oh gods, I had one of those, too. One of the really old ones where playlists couldn't be more than 999 songs (because I had all my songs sorted into directories and it didn't have a "play all" option), and it took over a minute for that to get loaded.

It just died for no reason one day. Just wouldn't start up. Thankful that that hunkajunk is gone now.

It does. I usually just open up the drive when I want to dump stuff in it.

Not to rain on all of the happy non-Mac mp3 players, but I had a Creative Jukebox Zen Xtra for almost a year and sent it back twice due to breakage of the stereo jack. Music coming out of only one headphone was not quite what I was looking for. I was fortunate in that I had an extended warranty and was able to get a refund after the second time, which was when I switched to my iPod. I got the extended warranty on that too, but I'm hoping to not have to use it.

Anyway, just a heads up on that - be very, very careful.

I have the same one you do, and I always laugh at my friends whose IPod batteries have died. And the ones who spend $400+ for the same amount of space. And then they have to pay extra for a case. Ahh, glee.

That made me want a Nomad a little bit more. However, while my USB ports are broken, my iPod with a FireWire connection will do just nicely.

Plus, Creative has a lot of goodwill to make up for after my Nomad Jukebox 4GB. That thing was, although initially euphoric, an absolute nightmare to manage after a couple months, while I've found it incredibly easy to manage the iPod.

If the Zen Touch also mounts, though, I'll have to reconsider future MP3 player purchases.

...b-but Solitaire...

I needed something to go running with as Bloomsday approaches and I must train, so I bought a little 512MB SanDisk MP3 player. It stores music in flash memory, so I use ordinary AAA batteries and will never have to deal with the battery issue. So far, I'm happy. The damn thing is a little bigger than a pack of gum and it does shuffle and stuff. Came with a clear plastic cover and an armstrap, headphones, necklace loop, USB connector and that's about it.

I love it bunches. And you know....nine hours of music is plenty for me. Swapping music in and out takes just a couple of minutes.

I have a Creative Zev Xtra and I LOOOOOOOOOVE it so much more than I would an iPod, which my brother insisted that he get. Cheaper, hardier, and more effective.

I can't wait to play with it tomorrow. I've got it all charged and loaded up with music, and now all I can do is stare longingly at it before going to bed. Yay for new toys!

I have one o' these, which has been lambasted in previous comments:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005NWR0/002-2090256-7441658?v=glance

It's worked fairly well. syncs with XP without a problem. Same with OSX. 98SE needs drivers, but that's it.
