How was that one guy able to say that Christian students are the most persecuted and still keep a straight face?

No pun intended.

... and, of course, our public schools are one of the few places where you can still commit assault and get away with it.

I changed my field of study two-thirds of the way to my teaching license because we had a required class on bullies and bullying and they pulled out that asinine 'It takes two to start a fight'. When I pointed out that it only takes one to commit assault, I got screamed at by the professor for being so negative.

I walked out of the program that afternoon.

"Many people feel that the most discriminated group of all is the Christian student in the public high school," Jacobs said

He didn't even say it right. "Most discriminated group" is nonsensical.
Plus, bonus points for his cowardice in using the evasive "Many people feel."

Here's an away message I have:
"I love being a supremely powerful liberal atheist and persecuting the Christians, who comprise a meager 88% or so of the U.S. population, and the hapless Republicans, who only control the White House, both houses of Congress, the judiciary, and most of the media."

I hope you don't mind me posting that in my journal. I don't even have anything intelligent to say. Those kid's stupidity has made me speechless.

What makes me sad is that that's my generation. They're still kids and they think they're making this wonderful statement promoting God when they really have no clue.

What a bunch of fucking asses. But if you think about it, they're in high school and a vast majority of high school students don't have the true ability to think for themselves; they think as a whole in regards to either their family or their peer group. So I guess I'm not surprised. Though I am surprised that the principle/faculty didn't do something about the more viscious shirts: "I hate Gays." etc.

It's things like that article that make me really appreciate my school and my fellow trainees, when we did the Day of Silence in '04 (We couldn't pull it together in time for '05) the trainees had next to no problem with it, with the exception of a few who had religious reasons for not doing it.

No one got called names or anything like that. In fact the only persecution we got was from our the staff, and even then that was because of the boards we made to wear explaining the Day of Silence. Hell, the biggest, toughest, most popular guys in school were some of the first ones to sign up.

Of course this is a place where two of the most popular guys in school, Lawrence and Santiago, are gayer than the Queer Eye guys. And I don't mean the hide-and-seek type of gay, I mean they fit the "gay image" happily and everybody loves them.

*headdesk* Y'know, I know not all Christians are homophobic asshats, but there are times when I almost hesitate to put that label on myself... people make assumptions and this crap is exactly why.

The problem is that sane Christians (you) don't speak loudly enough. Sanity is a little incompatible with loud ravings, but it has to be done to drown out the sillies.

Shoot, you stole my snark!

Poor grammar and a complete and utter lack of common sense are not a pretty combination. And as a Jew, few things get to me like accusations of "persecution" coming from kids who've never known what it's like not to be the default their whole lives. When you're outnumbered 10 to 1 and getting shoved around because of it, then you can start to talk to me about persecution. Idiot.

What's even more annoying is that the people getting assaulted like that don't even bother to report it half the time--and the other half of the time when they do, nothing positive or even useful comes out of it. (I know this, because I was one of those people.)

I think students who harass other students should be slapped with community service over their summer vacations until they're cured of the habit.

Well, we (Christians) do sometimes feel kicked around. We're the only group who you can really bash (at least in America) without someone complaining, for the same reason you can totally rip into Bill Gates, the Yankees, or white guys; we're the total opposite of the underdogs.

Christians have been the majority in America from its founding. Most of us try to be benign about it, but a small but noisy number get bossy about it, which brings down retaliation against the whole. So the end result is like a bunch of five-year-olds attacking a football linebacker; the linebacker's getting irritable if not actually hurt, but if he actually responds with anything other than a hapless grin, he looks like the bad guy.

"If you get kicked from behind, it's because you're out in front" and all that...

I used to get beaten up on a regular basis the year I was in 7th grade. No one would believe me, and the times I fought back, she and four of her friends would lie in wait for me later....

It became easier just to let them beat me up, especially after the calls from my parents to the schools did nothing and when I showed up with bruises, the school admin asked me, "How long have your parents been hitting you."

Because, of course, no one got beaten up at THEIR school.

I came to the conclusion long ago that modern Christianity has nothing to do with what my mother was talking about when she talked about "being a good Christian".

I've wandered a bit in my theology, but I think I'm being a better Christian than those kids, regardless whether I label myself agnostic or new age or what now.
