You know, I don't watch American Idol, but I've got enough people on my friends list where I know everything that's going on on it. And I think I can safely say after reading the spoilers for tonight's episode that now more than ever, I do not understand that show at all.

In any event, remember those scary-looking "updated" Bugs Bunny and pals from a while back? Well, this kid managed to petition Warner Brothers to lay off and just create new characters. I think I love that kid. :)

Oh, well. Off to finish off the Pairing List, drink my two bottles of Bawls and watch Firefly. And tomorrow, off to get my hair cut and pick up some hair dye. I think I want to be a blond again. Mmm-hmm. *nods*

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] abbylee brought up something that made me curious as a Firefly fan. Everybody I know who's seen the Serenity trailer is a fan already and has basically used the opportunity of fresh Firefly canon to squeal uncontrollably. But now I'm wondering, for those of you who've never seen an episode of Firefly, what do you think of the trailer?

I love that kid. Go, Kid.

And don't bother trying to figure out AI. I thought I'd made sense of it, but tonight hurt my brain way to much to keep it up.

Really?? What happened to the love for being a redhead?!

I do love being a redhead. But I'm having one of those weeks when I really just want to go all out and do a big change, just for the hell of it. :)

But now I'm wondering, for those of you who've never seen an episode of Firefly, what do you think of the trailer?

I'm very glad you asked that, because I just watched the trailer, hoping to get some idea what my friendslist is yammering about, and I still don't know.

I mean, the movie looks all right, but as trailers go, this is useless. They don't even explain what the movie is about, or _anything_, save that it's a sci-fi movie by Joss Whedon and Joss Whedon created Buffy and Angel, and everyone loves Joss Whedon. Ok, great, I like Astonishing X-Men as much as the next guy, but what is _this_?

Of course, I see it's not due out until September 30, so I'm sure this is just a proto-trailer for the fans, but even so, he's _got_ to have the script done by this point. The _least_ he could do is put a little exposition in there. Hell, even Lucas recapped the other movies for that "Revenge of the Sith" teaser.

See, that's what I was figuring. I mean, from a fan's standpoint, Mal gets to do his little speechifying and Jayne and Wash get to toss off some snarky one-liners and then River kicks everybody's ass. Which is nice and all, if you've actually seen the show, but it only lasted a little over half a season because a lot of people didn't watch the show.

You can tell they're aiming it specifically at the fans, because for all of the cool shots that have the rabid fans swooning, it doesn't really explain a damn thing. If they really want to hook non-fans, which they're going to have to do if they want anything remotely resembling a decent box office, they're going to have to spew some exposition. That's my major problem with the trailer -- which I adore, but I adore it as somebody who owns the box set and knows all of the good lines.

Incidentally, how did Whedon go from doing a half season of a TV show straight to doing a movie? If Firefly couldn't succeed on the small screen, then why would a studio want to invest in a theatrical release? This is the main reason all of this stuff throws me, because I didn't even know my flist was all into "Firefly"; it just wasn't around long enough for me to notice, I guess.

Not that I'm wishing ill on the project, but from the look of things, the studio is banking everything on people lining up at the box office on Joss' name alone. Like I say, this trailer looks more like a nod to the fans, so if there's a more public-oriented on coming later, then that's cool, but if this is it, then Whedon should seriously think about using this charisma of his in politics, where it'll do him the most good.

The trailer covered the fact that Simon and River are fugitives, that Mal took them in, and that some crazy assasin-guy was sent to get her back. And that River kicks ass. So I'm kind of wondering which trailer you were watching.

So I'm kind of wondering which trailer you were watching.

The one where I'm supposed to know in advance who "Simon", "River", and "Mal" are to understand it, I guess.

Right, because you can't possibly get the gist of the plot without knowing their names.

From: [identity profile] mike-smith.livejournal.com
No, I need to know who they _are_, not what they're called. WHY are they fugitives, WHY does this "Mal" take them in, WHY would an assassin be sent to retreive only River and not both of them? The point of a trailer is to make me _care_ about the characters enough that I want to see the movie to find out how their story ends. True as it may be, "River kicks ass" isn't a plot. Why do I want to see _her_ kicking ass as opposed to say, Wolverine kicking ass, which I could watch at home for free?

And no, _you_ telling me that doesn't solve anything. That was the trailer's job, and the trailer failed. If I was Serpentor, I'd have Battle Android Troopers taking it away right now.

The point was, you claimed that the trailer told you nothing. Now you're saying that it didn't tell you enough, which is something else entirely. And it did tell you a fair amount about Mal, but I guess subtlety isn't something that you're looking for in your exposition.

Well, I can't answer your question about the Serenity trailer directly, but a friend of mine is only a "minor league" fan--but a huge sci-fi/comics geek in general--and he was thrilled with the trailer. Said it had everything needed to get the sci-fi audience into the theaters.

I take his word for it. He has a sense of these things that I utterly lack.

Well, here's hoping. I'm only seeing it as the person who's in the middle of rewatching my entire box set, which mostly means I'm watching it through eyes of squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. :)

I showed the trailer to two of my best friends, and I may just have some converts on my hands. Come to the Firefly love. Yesssssss.

I've never seen Firefly and although the Serenity trailer left me going "huh?" in a couple of places, it still looks engaging enough that I'm looking forward to the movie.

Never seen a single ep of Firefly. Was planning on seeing it just because of Joss but...

I was making various noises throughout the trailer (Hell yeah! Sweet! Dude! Fuck yeah!) But my final thought? "Rock on!" Damn but that looks like some fine goodness.

God I'm so gonna actually get money someday and do that. I've heard everyone I know raving about Firefly but I missed the train by litterally a week. Not right and unfair.

Have never seen Firefly and I think Serenity looks cool!

Not that I have much of an idea what the hell is going on, and it does make me think Joss Whedon is really hanging on to that 'young girl with superpowers' thing he does. But it's a thing he does well, so.

It looks like a good movie, and I definitely want to see it.

It is just supposed to be a preliminary trailer, but I was wondering the same thing. It's still geared toward Whedon fans anyway, even if they haven't seen the show.
