So apparently they've cast Beast and Kitty for X3.

First off, Beast. It looks like no more Steve Bacic, which sucks because he didn't have more than a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in the first movie because I actually watched episodes of Andromeda to see if he'd be any good if they gave him a bigger role in the next movie and now I can never get those hours back. But still, I liked him.

So of course, they hired Kelsey Grammer.

Look, here's the thing. I don't much like Kelsey Grammer, and I've never really liked any of his roles other than Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2 and the sub commander in Down Periscope. I don't know if that says something about me or him, but whatever. And yes, he can do the smarter-than-you thing, but like [livejournal.com profile] wal_lace pointed out, it's the arrogance thing that gets to me. Hank's not arrogant about being smarter than you, which is a main part of what Frasier's about. Now, granted, it's not like I don't know Kelsey Grammer can act. It's just that after twenty years, can any of us really separate the actor from the character.

I do have faith, however, if only because these movies have a pretty solid history of turning questionable casting decisions into gold. Well, for the most part, if I give myself amnesia about Halle Berry. If they write Hank with a real, casual sense of humor rather than emphasizing his intelligence being greater than everybody else's, he shouldn't do that bad. I don't like it, but I think my greatest worry right now is that they won't do anything with the Bobby/Hank friendship, which was always one of my favorite things in the comics. If they're going to screw it up, though, I'd rather they just not do it at all.

On the other hand, Kitty, for whom I guess they've been talking to Maggie Grace. It's not like they're going to give her Oscarworthy material to work with, so she should be okay. I've only really seen her play two roles, both of which were spoiled, bitchy princesses. Again, it shouldn't be that bad, as long as they don't screw up the screenplay.

Again, at this point, it could be better and it could be worse, for both casting decisions.

I knew it was Kelsey before I read this, I just had a feeling, lol.

I had a feeling that they'd get either him or the guy who played his brother Niles on the show. I think his voice will be good for the part, but I hope he doesn't make me think he's a big blue furry Fraiser, eek.

Kelsey...Grammer...?

Why oh why couldn't just steal Neil from Spider-Man 3 or something instead?

Meh. I think the real point to be made here is this:

At least they haven't fucked up Gambit yet.

They're recasting Kitty again? But Katie Stewart was great in her (admittedly small) role in X2! *pouting* Okay, I'm biased because Katie was the original Cassandra in Stargate. *tries to decide whether Stargate fandom has been collectively spurned*

Did you see her in "A Wrinkle In Time?" Good, if not exactly true to the original. IMO.

The Bobby/Hank relationship is what will have me on pins and needles until I read every spoiler in the galaxy/see the movie.

I have a lot of good feelings about Kelsey Grammer - he can use his voice as that type of American accent you can't believe isn't British because it's so articulated and that is what is important to me about Beast. The fact that Beast can lay down some Gilbert and Sullivan as fast as he can "Pinball Wizard" (which now gives me an idea...) is at the core of his character.

Beast? I do not worry about. A fellow Julliard alumnus can do no wrong (yeah, I know I didn't go to Julliard, but maybe if I keep saying I do, people will believe me...)

I think most of my reservations rest on the fact that I just don't like him personally. It's much what I think about Angelina Jolie -- I think she's an interesting person, a charitable woman, a great mother, a gorgeous individual, a talented actress, and yet I still can't stand to watch her in movies. The difference is that I like almost everything about Kelsey Grammer except him. But then, since he'll be covered in blue makeup, I hopefully will be able to fool myself. :)

On the other hand, if they're doing a CG Beast with Grammer just doing the voice, a little corner of my mind wishes they could have tracked down the guy who did his voice in the '90s X-Men cartoon. He's not the most astounding actor on the face of the planet (I remember squeeing giddily when I realized it was him as the big sidekicky guy in the old Hercules-esque Sinbad series, for God's sake), but I grew UP with that man voicing Hank in my head, and it would.. well, make me squee giddily.

Grammer does have a good voice for it, for all the reasons Mice mentioned, so I'm hopeful. I remember thinking "OMGWTFBBQ?! JAKE?! BUT HE SUCKS!!!" when I read about Bobby's casting, and look how awesomely that turned out. :>

PS Down Periscope rules. Arr.

I remember when I first saw the pictures of Hugh that AICN posted when he was first announced as Wolverine -- which, by the way, were awfully lit shots in some office somewhere in which he was wearing a baseball cap and smiling like a dork -- and I remember thinking, "That guy?! He'll make a horrible Logan!" So, goes to show what these movies can do to an actor. :)

PS Down Periscope rules. Arr.

HEE. My dad and I both like submarine movies, and when I told him last year I wanted DVDs for my birthday, the first thing he asked me was, "Oh, do you have Down Periscope yet?" It shows how weird we are that my immediate reaction was a squeally, "No, but I so have to get it! Oh, my God, do you have it yet?!" Because we both love sub movies, and we're both flailing fangirls, apparently. ;)

Trust me, a balding man should not play furless Hank, but the fact that they are going to be stocking up on Ronco's Hair-In-A-Can in Blue Velvet is going to help loads in this respect.

I just said out loud "Kelsey Grammer? Hmm." And my husband asked what I was talking about and I told him and he yelled "Awesome!! That is PERFECT!!"

So he's excited.

I'm confused. Have they cast Kitty yet? They are talking to Maggie Grace, or they WERE talking to Maggie Grace?

I agree completely. Though I always see Natalie Portman as Kitty in my head, but age wise, for the film, she'd be too old.

Maggie Grace makes me weep.

But the Kitty from the first movie was some random chick from Toronto. When they moved the production to Vancouver a lot of the actors they cast in minor roles were re-cast with Vancouver talent because it was cheeper, or because the character now had a speaking role and thus could not be filled by some re-haired extra (eg Pyro). My roommate was pissed because a lot of the extra's were people she knew from Toronto and she felt bad that they got cut when the production moved here. They may be moving it again which would mean more re-casting.

Kelsey Grammer? WTF? KELSEY GRAMMER? Are they flipping nuts? Oh man, that just ruins any chance of hot Bobby/Beast slash from now on. With Steve Bacic it was hotness incarnate, with Kelsey... I'm just not going there. That's 12 different shades of wrong.

Why not the girl who was Kitty in the FIRST TWO MOVIES?! She looked just fine to me!

And it could be worst, there's "JRM as Gambit" rumors floating about. I don't believe them, and I actually like JRM, but the thought is terrifying.

...I see exactly where they're going with this Beast and....it's fine, it's not my favorite mostly because he's too old but he has the right voice and snooty "oh my stars" ishness but I dunno the best part about Beast is that he's not an established father figure, he's just as messed up as everyone else and...hmm.

Who's Maggie Grace?

Maggie Grace is the bitchy blonde on Lost. She might be able to pull it off, but (and I'm saying it as a Shannon lover) that's a big "might."
