Jul. 11th, 2005 08:55 amWell, I said I was going to, but I haven't actually gotten around to talking about Doctor Who. (You know, other than the occasional spastic flailing.) So here I go.
Okay, look, before this, I never actually saw Doctor Who at all. All right, I saw the TV movie, but I don't really remember it anyway, which goes to show how much of an impact the TV movie had on me.
But, seriously? Oh, do I love this show.
It's like I said last night after The 4400. I watched the whole series last week not so much to find out what happened at the end but because it's seriously a fun ride. That's what I'm blaming for the reason I keep watching them over and over again still. They got me so incredibly hooked, y'all. :)
I don't know how he compares to the other Doctors, but I loved Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. Nice blend of goofy and serious, not to mention the terrific chemistry between him and Billie Piper (and later on, John Barrowman). Honestly, all three characters need to get a room. ;) That's the thing, though. While it's not exactly like with Veronica and Wallace (where if the writers hooked them up, I'd pretty much have to throttle them), the friendship between the three of them is just too awesome. And while I'll miss him as the Doctor, the fun thing will be watching Ten develop a new rapport with the other two next season.
The Parting of the Ways was really a great way to end the season. If they pulled this shit in any other fandom -- replace one character, kill and raise another from the dead only to leave him behind -- I'd be so damn pissed off, but I loved the way they pulled it off. It did a great service to the relationship between the three characters, and to Christopher Eccleston's run as the Doctor.
I'd have to say my favorite episodes were The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Captain Jack, Glen Miller, and creepy-as-fuck people in gas masks. Those were my kind of episodes. ;) (On the other hand, Father's Day really got on my nerves. I mean, I've got enough experience with trying to write time travel in my own stuff to come up with some pretty decent theories on the whole episode, and the emotional stuff worked just perfectly, but ... *mind boggles*)
Obviously, I love Captain Jack. He's like an oversexed, leather-pants-wearing woobie, he is. *cuddles him* But I seriously haven't mentioned how much I adore Rose. I can totally believe in the devotion the Doctor and Jack have for her, because she's just too cute, and not in an annoying way. I mean, it's obvious she's meant to be with the two of them and not Mickey, off having adventures and things.
In summation ... new episodes yet? *whimper*

Date: 2005-07-11 02:52 pm (UTC)I was born a few years into Tom Baker's run and grew up hiding behind the couch, so I'm attached to that particular Doctor but I have no problem with new Doctors coming along. I have loved CE's Doctor, loved him. I'm partial to a lot (3,4,8 and 9) of them though and I'm sure I'll like 10.
Comparatively 9 was far more like 4 than any of the others, had that odd mix of goofy/serious. They are replaying his episodes here now so this is more than me just remembering, 4 was weird.
Actually I've been thinking that Jack is what most writers would come up with if they created Doctor Who today rather than 40 odd years ago.
A mysterious Time Traveller, with hidden sinister secretive governmental persons affecting his past! Uses Alien Tech!

Date: 2005-07-11 04:03 pm (UTC)I have to agree with you on that, but I always felt incredibly sorry for Mickey. I mean, he's a good person, and so very devoted to Rose (and Jackie, probably because she's connected to Rose), and... well... the Doctor did kind of ruin his life and all that.
Rose is fantastic. I was starting to despair of finding a female character I could really adore, and then along comes the new series of Doctor Who, and lo and behold! I love every single character in it. I love the Doctor, and Rose, and Jack, and Mickey, and most of the minor characters, and Jack again (because you can't not love Jack), and eeeee Doctor Who.
Um. Apologies for randomly coming into your LJ without introducing myself and squeeing all over it (although I dare say you're used to it). I'm Riona, here from

Date: 2005-07-11 04:24 pm (UTC)Oh, I totally agree with you on that count. Poor Mickey. He's not a bad guy at all, it just turned out in the end that he's definitely not the guy for Rose. He needs someone who's going to stay put and be content, and she needs someone who won't pass out or run away when aliens attack.
And I'll second you on the all-encompassing character love. In fact, I think the only character I didn't like at all was Adam, but he was just asking for it after doing something that stupid.

Date: 2005-07-11 05:53 pm (UTC)And I third the Mickey awwwpoorthinglove. It's nice to see a character who's the "ex" (more or less) but is not painted as a jerk. I don't think he was stupid, per se...just an ordinary nice homey sort of bloke who simply was way out of his depth and couldn't adapt. Not brilliant but a decent boyfriend as long as aliens didn't show up, and not a hero but brave enough when he had to be. :)

Date: 2005-07-11 10:06 pm (UTC)I downloaded the new Dr. Who eps on a whim after seeing a pic of Eccleston (*drool*) online and watched all the eps in 4 days. This is definitely one show I'll be hanging on to and watching over and over. It's one of the few where I love all the characters - even the minor ones - and want to see what happens next.
And am I alone in crying when Doc 9 died? I *liked* 9!
