I think it's a smart move on his part. Even if he's totally innocent, a bad mug shot picture would haunt his political career for years to come. Instead, he's all happy and clean-shaven, the quintessential portrait of a perfectly upstanding public servant. Clearly, DeLay not only knew about thesmokinggun.com, but he was prepared for them.

Really, what I'm wondering now is why Dick Cheney always looks so surly or depressed all the time. Hey, if Tom DeLay can look that chipper while being booked, you'd think Cheney could lighten up a little. Maybe it's his knees.

That's true. Of course, the problem is that it's a mugshot, and I don't know about anybody else, but I think I'd rather the happy medium of a corrupt politician who looks as if he might realize he's in trouble. The smile and the happy expression is kind of the opposite of getting your mugshot after being dragged out of a gay bar after drinking five bottles of JD and starting a fight with twenty bikers, and looking it. He shouldn't look perky, regardless of his job ... he's getting booked, for Pete's sake. I mean, it'd probably be better if he'd made a nice neutral expression like they have you make when you take a passport photo. ('Cause really, can't you already see the mockage on the Daily Show coming? ;))

And Cheney will never lighten up. He's like your grumbly great-uncle, except that he doesn't send you twelve bucks on your birthday.
