I swear to God, I actually remember saying sometime last night, "My mom took me shopping in Target on Black Friday and I got all giddy in the housewares department. I was like, 'But of course I need twelve place settings, see, because what if the Seven Dwarves and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse come over for dinner?'" So, yeah, last night at work was about the least serious I've ever been there, which is saying a lot.

Meanwhile, those CDs we were supposed to get as Christmas presents? Rob Thomas, Leann Rimes, Michael Buble, and the Click Five. Show of hands ... who thinks I would like any of those CDs at all? And for the record, no DVD. Le sigh.

Oh, and before I went to work the other day, I picked up Undead and Unemployed and Undead and Unappreciated at Target, mostly because they were really cheap and I've read the first one and just flipped through the other two in the stores. Did I mention these books drive me nuts, and not in a good way? Okay, so the reason I read the first one and then just kind of stopped was that after the first read-through of Undead and Unemployed, Betsy started to grate. I mean, she already was grating in the first read-through, but at a tolerable level, and then I read it again and peeked at a short story in the same universe in some anthology where she appeared and basically came off as a shrill harpie for four or five pages. So not so much with the endearing, then.

So now I've finally shelled out the bucks and read the second and third books and ... well, still grating on me. I like the secondary characters better, although God knows that's always the case with me. But Betsy just reminds me way too much of why I can't watch the characters on Sex and the City, either. Inevitably, it's All About Her, and not in the plot way (although everything does come back to her in that way, too, but that's sort of unavoidable when your main character is a vampire queen). There's only so many times that I want to hear complaints about shirts that have gotten ruined and makeup that's a mess and hair that's been messed up and honestly, get over it, princess. (And reading her complaining about and to Sinclair for three straight books was just bugging the hell out of me. Yes, he lied and/or wasn't sharing information with you. Yes, it's okay for you to be mad at him. But no, maybe THAT level of whining is a bit too much.)

And the shoe thing ... oh, God, the shoe thing. Maybe it's because I don't spazz out over a pair of shoes, so I can't really identify with having fits over shoes getting, you know, normal everyday wear and spending more on a pair of shoes than you would on your heating bill and instantly lowering your assessment of a person because they're wearing practical shoes to their job. And all of the obsession with good-looking designer shoes gets tiresome when the outfits she wears with them make me want to cringe.

Plus, the Republican cracks are tired and if I hear one more time about how Jessica is black so all of these other people hate her but put up with her because she's a bajillionaire, I'm going to disgorge a major internal organ. I'd like to believe there's a happy middle ground for a character's opinion in these books when it comes to Jessica that lies between "likes her for who she is" and "is a bigoted fuckstick sucking up to her because she's rich."

Don't mind me. They're pretty good books when I can manage to ignore all of that stuff. Which admittedly is pretty difficult, but still.

EDIT: You know why my mother is adorable? Because she still puts "From Santa" on our presents. And we just helped carry them in from the garage to put under the tree! That's why she's adorable. :)
