So the Oscar nominations are out. Woohoo! Brokeback got eight nominations! YAY! *happy dance* And Jake Gyllenhaal has an Oscar nomination! Wait, hold on. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger have Oscar nominations to their names. Think about that. I mean, I think Jake's was coming, just maybe not this soon, but ... but ... A Knight's Tale! 10 Things I Hate About You! That guy has an Oscar nomination! I swear I'm not knocking Heath Ledger at all, because his performance in Brokeback was amazing and lovely and I want it to win SO BAD, but it just seems amusing when you just think of it as "Heath Ledger has an Oscar nomination." Which just, you know, seems weird. A good weird, though. (In related news, good for Michelle Williams. She's the best actor to come out of the dreck that was Dawson's.)

That Best Actor category, though ... it's friggin' killing me. Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Terrence Howard, David Straitharn, and Joaquin Phoenix. There isn't a person on that list who could win and it would make me anything other than deliriously happy for them. The performances I have seen I loved, and the ones I didn't, I adore the actors and think they deserve all the recognition they can get.

Best Actress ... I may be the only one who's happy Keira Knightley's on the list, and I don't know it's going to get me beat up by a gang of Austen-lovers with embroidery needles and flowered bonnets in a dark alley, but after watching the BBC version, I, um, I liked her Elizabeth better than Jennifer Ehle's. I still liked Colin Firth better (even though Matthew McFadyen just ... GUH. Hello, nurse), but still. I'm having happy little raptures over Felicity Huffman, though, whom I just love to pieces and want to win not only because she's always so damn grateful and happy for any recognition she gets, but when she wins the camera always cuts back to William H. Macy, who always cries and looks at her like, "That's MY wife, bitches! You just WISH you were married to her!"

Best Supporting Actor ... I have so much George Clooney love, I do. And JAKE GYLLENHAAL, which really, my need for him to win is self-explanatory. And Paul Giamatti, whom I adore and totally just completely based a character in the Books of Boggs off of (which is probably a bad thing, because bad things always happen around that guy and I would love for Paul Giamatti to win). And yeah, William Hurt and Matt Dillon, who probably won't win against those other three, but YAY!

Best Supporting Actress ... It's probably between Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, and good for them, because I love them.

Best Film ... Oh, Brokeback is so going to win, and good for it. I still have to see Capote and Crash (I plan on picking up Crash and Hustle and Flow this week), but I loved all of the other three nominated films. (I'm not sure Munich was Oscar-calibur, but I liked it, so ... *shrugs*)

And because it's apparently Presents for TP Day, the teams were announced for the next season of TAR. Aside from my biggest problem right now, which is that it's on opposite Supernatural and that's the total SUCK, you know what I noticed right off the bat? No gay couple this season. Well, unless they're going with the euphemistic "long-time friends" thing, which TAR's never done. Hmm.

In any event, that Lake guy's won the "Type A personality" designation for this season, which I guess means he's going to turn out to be the total asshole. I have a feeling I'm going to want to punch Dani and Danielle -- I'm sorry, you have those names, those tank tops, and those breasts? *headdesk* From what I can see, the old couple for this season actually looks capable, so maybe we might see one getting by on talent for once rather than dumb luck. (I love my TAR old couples, but seriously.) Of all the teams listed, my favorite is BJ and Tyler (while completely disregarding the dorky photo) just because they sound really cool. Of course, with my luck, that means they'll be gone in the first episode.

Trust me, if you take a look at a good number of actors and actresses who have been nommed for Oscars, there's a lot of bad movie skeletons in them there closets . . .

Ain't that the truth. I think it just hits me with Heath Ledger because 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale are two of my favorite pleasures that I watch over and over again ... and then there's Brokeback Mountain. Heh. :)

As for my team reaction: I think it'll be another alpha male season. Eric and Jeremy are my pick.

Dude, I don't know which one is which yet, but the one on the left is kinda cute.

I rather liked 10 Things I Hate About You, actually. Better than average for the genre.

Don't forget that Jake made Bubble Boy. And Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio's early work was anything but relevatory. Ditto Jamie Foxx (hello? Booty Call?).

I like this game.

They're both kind of cute, so you can have Guy on the Left and I can have Guy on the Right. Even if they don't shine performance-wise, I can still hope that they'll stick around to provide pretty David and Jeff-style amusement. ("Duuuuuuuuude. Where are the clues?" "Duuuuuuuude.")

And Paul Giamatti was in Private Parts.

You're right, this is kind of fun. :)

I'm so happy for Jake. He's been so ignored thus far. I so agree with you about Heath. A guy who started out doing--well the list of movies speaks for itself, but the fact that he's come this far and done such amazing work in such an amazing film makes me giddy.

I so want Felicity Huffman to win and that's just based on the clips. The film hasn't been any where around me. I was lucky to get to see BBM. I'm stranded in the center of a cultural vacuum.

Here's where we part company a bit. I think Michelle so deserves it over Rachel. I like Rachel's work. I liked her in The Constant Gardner, but I think Michelle's got the harder part. How do you make Alma likeable. I didn't find her the least bit likeable in the short story, but Michelle brought her alive and humanized her in a way that I could feel her pain.

Yeah, but Halle Berry gets credit for showing up in person to collect her Razzie.

Sadly, I agree. I might not like her, but I gotta respest any actor who shows up to collect their Razzie.

Considering Tom Cruise's behavior recently, I'm amazed he hasn't sued over his Razzie nom this year. Pissy little jerk.

He will likely state that the fact that Android Kate got a Razzie Nod is damaging little Fetal L. Ron Version 2.0 that was implanted there via cosmic ray gun wielded by John Travolta.

I swear, dude, it's like this awards season finally stopped and went "Dude, is that Dana from Sports Night? HOLY CRAP I LOVED YOU ON THAT SHOW!" and started flinging awards at her left and right. And I'm down with that because HOLY CRAP I LOVED HER ON THAT SHOW.

And William H. Macy is totally right. I do wish I was married to his wife. But then I'd feel bad because I'd have broken up the best marriage ever.
