You know what I think bugs me most about the Grey's Anatomy finale, among others?

It's just, is it too much to get ONE happy ending? ONE?!

Look, I know it's summer, and I know that getting a major plotline to have a happy ending before the summer is asking a lot. But I'm not asking for a huge happy ending in every single plotline on the shows I watch. I'm just asking for ONE. One plotline to end with a non-angsty twist that makes me go, "YAAAAAAY!" and flail happily for the rest of the summer. No strings attached, or at least as few as possible.

You want to know what I have right now? I have Jim and Pam kissing on The Office. That's the only thing I have to be flaily and thrilled about for the rest of the summer, and she's still engaged. It's a beautiful kiss that's horribly complicated, and I love the hell out of it, but JESUS. In retrospect, it hurts just as much as it makes me happy, because you just know it's waaaaay too early for the writers to hook them up.

Let's take this show by show, shall we?

Veronica Mars

I have yet to see the finale, but I've spoiled myself rotten on it, and there's not a single thing in there that makes me want to bounce around in glee. The cute woobie being a psycho? No Dick reaction? Arrested Weevil? Mac broken-hearted? Keith's life threatened, even if he ended up alive anyway?

Supernatural

I have three Winchesters unconscious in a crushed Impala after being plowed into by a semi.

Desperate Housewives

Well, let's just say it would probably help if I liked watching any of these characters anymore after what the writers have done to them.

Charmed

You know, if they had ended it this week instead of next, I would have been happier. Because yes, next week they're having a family reunion of sorts, but this week Phoebe and Paige were dead and Holly Marie Combs was punching the Retarded Bimbo over and over again and somehow I'm a little afraid that scene will make me morbidly happier than seeing the Halliwell boys again will.

Grey's Anatomy

The dog got put to sleep, McDreamy cheated on Addison (she went to her prom with a Star Wars geek!) with Meredith, who cheated on Chris O'Donnell (he's scruffy and lovable!), and frankly I'd rather the vet cheat with Addison at this point because at least I still like them. Callie's getting creepy. Burke was all injured and Cristina was all confused. George still has a stupid haircut. And if they get Izzie back together with Alex next season, I'm punching things.

I realized this morning after reading reactions and posting about it that I think a lot of the reason I wanted Denny and Izzie to have a happy ending is because I just wanted ONE happy ending. Okay, yeah, Izzie went batshit, but before Denny died, they were thrilled. She had on a pretty dress and he was having fun watching people in pretty dresses and tuxes and I sincerely wanted one set of writers whose main goal wasn't to either piss me off or make me cry.

I'm SICK of this season making me cry, for fuck's sake. Just because it's a plot that makes the audience burst into tears does not make it a good fucking idea, damn it.

I just wanted one happy ending with as few dark, angsty strings attached as possible, and I'm still waiting for it.

At this rate, I'll be waiting until September.

*is welling up again out of frustration*

P.S. And don't even remind me about The 4400. We're going to war. This won't be pretty.

I'm so sick of storylines that make me cry, it's ridiculous.

remember when shows considered it normal to end with happy stuff instead of vying to CRUSH OUR VERY SOULS?

HONESTLY.

Happy endings are not cliffhangers. Happy endings don't inspire the viewers to absolutely not miss the beginning of the next season because they have to know what happened next. In short, happy endings don't grab the fans by the shirtfront and pull them, possibly kicking and screaming, into the next season.

It's tactical, on the writers' parts.

Oh, I get that myself, but it's not even that I want one huge happy ending with all storylines tied up at season's end. I want somewhere, anywhere, on one of my TV shows for there to be just one subplot that makes me happy. It doesn't even has to be a major one, it just has to be ONE, and they're not even giving me that anymore. I really wish one show could manage to make me giddy over here and drag me kicking and flailing into next season over there.

look i'm usually all for cliffhangers and i usually see everything from a screenwriter's point of view, but in grey's anatomy's case? a show i was ready to claim i loved as much as i love supernatural? i'm not even sure i *will* tune in next season. augh.

From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
Honestly. If their big cliffhanger is, "What will two cheating characters the audience loathes do about their relationship?" ... bah.

I mean, take a tally. Who on that show is genuinely happy and not soaking in hurt right now? Bailey. There is not one other character on there right now who, aside from the general sadness over the loss of Denny, is having a fairly normal life. She hasn't gotten shot, her husband isn't cheating on her, nothing's wrong with her baby. Next season will probably start with an anvil dropping on her head.

Good things ARE allowed to happen to these people, and surprisingly enough, Patrick Dempsey is not the good thing that has to happen to everybody.

*nods* I get that. Izzy's bizarre and sudden hysteria on Sunday night's ep seemed so out of character for what she'd been shown as, up until then.

And I haven't had the chance to watch my BitTorrented copies of last night's eps yet. Undoubtedly I'll have more of a reaction after I see 'em.

Mind you, I think you have a perfectly valid point. However, I have to wonder how much of the cliffhanger paradigm is due to the writers, and how much is due to pressure from above. Given the premature cancellation of various recent shows that were damned good (like, say, Firefly and Wonderfalls), there may be a certain amount of nervousness in writerly circles.

oh, i think izzie's behaviour (which only gets worse in the last part of the finale) is perfectly human and justified. that's not it.

i. they. STUPID SHOW.

*raises dubious eyebrow* I'm not sure I agree. The whole "OMG, the man who I'm falling in love with just got bumped down the donor list because his donor died on the table, and now his life might be at risk, so I'm going to put him in severe medical danger so that he might maybe possibly get a heart faster" hysteria just totally threw me.

Yes, Izzy cares about her patients. But she's still usually pretty together about it, all the same. The hysterical hand-wringing rant session at Denny struck me as... just off. *shrug*

My little fannish heart is on overload from the SPN finale alone. I honestly don't think I could take another ending like that. Whatever happened to cliffhangers? You know, make us worry, not make us cry, cry, cry until we're all blotchy and shriveled up like raisins? Keep the tension, not CRUSH US?

God, I got teary at your review/rant thing. How weird is that.

I know what you mean though. The only finale (that I've seen so far) that has left me feeling the least bit satisfied is SPN. And that's only because I was expecting like SO much worse.

Oh, well and then Jim/Pam, but that won't pan out so soon.

GA was horrible. HORRIBLE.

VM was like bad fic, it was just completely OOC and WTF?!?!

And DH probably won't have a decent finale.

*sigh*

Sucky.

From what I read (and I read practically all) the Halliwell boys return will be worth it. It has to be. This is the only reason I'm watching this finale. And it will be the first and only time we'll have big Chris and big Wyatt together and not fighthing :)

I'm grasping onto that image with both hands, because I want to see that more than anything Charmed-related I've ever wanted, but between us not getting a spinoff (granted, an unlikely spinoff since it would have to have been set in the future, but STILL) and the fact that Kern has so much fun fucking up everything he touches, I'm trying not to hold my breath.

as far as I can tell Charmed's ending on a happyish note...bit like how season 7 ended (they should'a left it there) and DH lost me after s1 but it's kinda scary the lack of happy finales :| like ever...

Yeah, but with Charmed, it's the end of the series, so it's not a surprise they're going all-out with the happy endings. It's in between seasons of these goofy shows that they can't seem to carry one miniscule happy thread to tide us over.

DH wasn't so bad this week, although I continue to wish someone would inform Teri Hatcher what a crafts services table is. Unless there's an audition for Olive Oyl in her future, the microphone stand look isn't doing a damn thing for her.

Well, VM made with the kissing, too! Also, even if you know Keith can't die the moment when he comes back is a gigantic relief. Finally, Duncan had his last hoorah by calling a hit on Aaron, and if that doesn't qualify as good times I don't know what does.

I think the going theory is that if you give them something that'll enrage them for the finale/summer, they'll stay tuned for the premier come fall.

Charmed is supposed to get a happy ending because it's the SERIES FINALE, if it'd been the season finale, it might have ended this week. (Although, damn, I missed Piper being violent?!)

TV is certainly pissing me off with this "everyone must be unhappy for us to know how to write" mentality. No one in the writers room seems to know what "happy" means anymore unless it's connected with "and then shoot them in the stomach for dramatic tension!"
