... the fuck?!

Okay, so let me see if I've got Jeb Bush's ethics straight here.

Severely disabled persons on life support should be kept alive regardless of the emotional, mental, physical, and financial pains to everyone involved because a ridiculously low quality of life is better than no life at all.

But if some sick son of a bitch knocks up a severely disabled woman against her will, screw her.

EDIT: More info on the case. Apparently, it all happened in 2004, but it's still pretty creepy.

But see, she didn't have a psychotic break and kill someone. So obviously she should live forever, and also, we should've totally gotten her pregnant and forced her to have the baby. In fact, we should pretty much be using coma patients as incubators. You know, for rich women who don't want to go through the bother of birthing the children themselves.

It's not like he cares about the foetus's life either - unless he's actually so stupid that he doesn't get that if a woman with severe cerebral palsy and seizures and the cognitive capability of a one-year-old gives birth without medical supervision, the baby's not likely to live either. Which I doubt he is (unlike his brother.)

He's playing games and making a stupid point with the lives of both mother and foetus.

Bastard.

What kills me is that pulling this shit actually hurts him! I'm sure he's already written off the Democrats & indpendents as never going to support him, so he's trying to pander to the Christian Fundamentalist / Republican base. The problem is that he's so blatant about it that he's alienating the Republicans that AREN'T hardcore Xtian Fundamentalists.

...Maybe that's his plan. I've heard that Jeb doesn't want to run for President in '08, so this may be his way of preempitvely preventing a nomination.

I've actually got family-based connections pretty high up in the Republican party, and I'm pretty sure based on what I'm seeing and hearing that's *not* the plan for 2008 at least.

If the party loses the White House in 2008, they'll probably rethink the plan, but as of right now that ship is largely considered to have sailed.

It was actually supposed to be a Bush Brothers ticket in 2000 (little known insider fact) with Jeb on top, but that was predicated on Jeb winning the Florida governorship in 1994.

Which, I am proud to say, we managed to block at the eleventh hour.

I'll tell you what to look out for -- Jeb taking over FEMA once he's out of Tallahassee.

I have just realized that this is the only proper usage of the words "Jeb Bush" and "ethics" in close proximity.

Anti-choice activists always say that the life of the fetus is as important but not more important than the life of the mother. Doesn't this kind of, you know, go against that?

Actually, from what I've observed and read, that's not quite correct. Severely disabled persons...etc.... should be kept alive on life support as long as the family has money to fork over for it. As soon as they're bankrupt, pull the plug.

Actually, my first thought was how could he do this to a child? If that disabled woman has severe seizures she is probably on multiple anti-seizure medications and possibly even more for other reasons. Does this IDIOT have any idea what kind of damage those pills or medications will do to the fetus in the first 17 weeks? The "baby" inside that poor woman may be an utter nightmare of ruined and missing organs simply growing as a tissue mass. Until the 22 to 25 week these people won't even know for sure and certain if this "baby" will have a heartbeat.

He seems to think that his misguided crusade to save a child will indeed save a child - but what if what he saves is born missing a brain stem or worse? Are we as a nation supposed to sit back and watch a small lump of flesh breathe and suffer on the news for his moral edification?

If all thise ass wants to do is think of the child then he should actually THINK of the child.

That was what went through my head before thinking of the poor disabled woman's suffering. She's got misery in spades without the pregnancy simply from the rape. Ostensibly she's not "with it" enough to recognize or understand the implications of pregnancy - but she is cogent enough to understand the pain and trauma (physical and psychological) of rape. She needs a guardian willing to sue Jeb Bush for adding to her mental duress on top of okaying an abortion >:(

I can't help thinking what it would be like to either grow up knowing or find out at a later date that your severely disabled mother was raped, forced to carry you to term by a crusading politician, and died in the attempt. Even if the kid is physically healthy, that kind of start definitely won't be all that emotionally or mentally helpful.

If Jeb cares so much about this woman and, more importantly, her fetus, he should adopt both of them. Have them both live in his house — a severely brain-damaged woman and her very likely deformed waterhead of a child.

It'll be just like when he was growing up.

OK, OK, bush is an ass. But that's not really what this is about.

I am pro-choice. But I am confused by the anger in this entry. (Bear with me, I'm not just trolling for reactions here.)

What exactly is wrong with this woman carrying the fetus to term?

As far as I can tell, this woman does not seem to have any expicit objection to carrying the fetus. (I grant that she has the capacity of a pre-schooler, but let's just take the objections one step at a time.)

The judge is not so much refusing to give her what she wants as he is deciding what is in her best interest. An abortion could be traumatizing to a preschooler. (Note that this is NOT the same as a judge making decisions for you or me. SOMEONE must make all her decisions for her.)

I would hazard to propose that the judge - of all people in her life, including herself and the rights activists that have lobbied on both sides of the issue - appears to be the one doing The Right Thing.

Is it possible that all this anger is simply indignance that this woman has been violated? Will everyone's anger be assuaged if that baby is wiped from our existence? Out of sight, out of mind?

The crime here is that she was raped, definitely, but I don't see how aborting the fetus changes that.

Again, I am pro-choice. I just don't see that this woman is being denied anything. The judge is acting as her guardian.

The judge wasn't acting as her guardian. He refused to rule on a technicality, thereby further delaying the whole process.
