I just ... I can't even. MY GOD, MY CHILDHOOD.

I have got to give that link to my little brother when I get a chance. Neither one of us are ridiculously into Batman, but we both collected comics as kids and it's probably the one thing we know equally well. And that right there is so bad, it rolls right back round to brilliant again.

I have a feeling that when I finish a fic, the floodwaters will open right up and out the fic will come. But until then ... *sigh*

As soon as I saw the utter horror, combined with 'Batman', I just knew it was going to be a link to something about ASBAR.

The scripts are even more horrific. When it comes to the lingering, pretty-much-naked shots of Vicki Vale, I'm pretty certain the paper the script was originally written on has some... unpleasant stains.

That is the MOST AWESOME LINK EVER!

It's at this moment, running across the moonlit ocean hefting an automobile over his head, that Superman realizes he's a fucking idiot.

*dies*

Well, really, who doesn't dictate articles while walking around in a bra and panties swilling a martini?

I can't even wrap my brain around, "Are you retarded or something?" I think I stared at the computer screen for two straight minutes with my jaw hanging open.

Wow. Wow. I knew all about the Vicki garbage, but I didn't know about the rest of it. *headshake* Oh, Miller. You really are an idiot.

Wow.

That's... wow.

But what will become of Dick Grayson, who is only 12 years old? Will he be forced to live off rats?

I can't imagine the Frank Miller who wrote The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One coming up with this freakshow.

But then I remember The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and yeah, I can so totally imagine Miller doing this. *nodnodnod*

How scared was I when I learned otherwise...?

He just might not make it since he is only 12 years old after all.

Wait....how old is he again?

Don't forget the smacking Grayson around like he's an unwanted step-child even though Batman KIDNAPPED him.

This hurts to read. I had to take a break because I cannot believe that Frank Miller and such pretty art could be so horrible (12 years).

I'd send you scans of the script if I had them. Since I don't, here's a link to a GRC column with scans: here.

Comics fandom? Is. Not. Impressed.

As Weaver says, comics fandom is Not Impressed. At All. In fact, I might go so far as to say that many people want Frank Miller strung up.

I talked to the guy at the comic book store after the first issue came out and he said that he and the owner thought the issue was bad, creepy, and kind of hinted at pedophilia. When the COMIC BOOK STORE GUY sees the icky subtext, it's not subtext anymore.

I don't really follow comics, but it looks like he phoned it in.

Probably while wearing pink lingerie and heels, and drinking a martini (with gin. 12 years old.).

Heh, well, the person who wrote that column has pretty much described why I keep reading ASBaR. It's so bad that, for me, it's become entertaining.

Nah. It takes effort to be that bad, and I've seen the scripts. He was detailed and very specific about the shots he wanted. No laziness, just Frank Miller's huge, fucked-up issues.

I do like the All-Star Superman, though. It's very classic Superman, in terms of stories, characters (Jimmy Olsen in his hundred different disguises, which often include skirts! Black Kryptonite! Lois temporarily getting superpowers!), but it's done with love. Real, strong love for the characters, for that era.

That's the thing with comics. You can tell the people that write them with love and the people that don't. It's a canon where the canon is, essentially fanfic, so you have the writers that write fanfic in that fandom because they love it, love the characters, the world, and then you have the writers that just... well, I'm sure you know the type of fic. The names might be the same, but it might as well be original fic for the relationship it has to the characters you know and love.

That's what I thought, too. You can't just phone in that level of misogyny. You have to WORK at it.
