A question for the writers on my friends list ...

What songs do you listen to when you write? Are there certain songs that you listen to when you have to write love scenes, fight scenes, humorous scenes, etc.?

You know, I'd have to type up my entire playlist to give you that.

just general moment to moment stuff I like non intrusive and yet still very active music, Braveheart soundtrack is popular, anything classical actually, some of the new agey stuff...action and combat type scenes, high drama I like stuff like techno and industrial and metal, romancy crap I like loreena mckennitt, enya, artists like that. Bjork actually has a good combo of all that on her CD's, I think homogenics? is the one I listen to alot. It keeps me flowing and doesn't distract with the exception of that one song where she starts screeching higher and higher pitched and blowning distortion all over everything...and by then I'm usually in the mood to pause in writing and sit and screech right along with her. (My husband says I am becoming to much like my nickname of banshee)

My tastes are odd, there are a number of types of music that while there are a few artists and some songs I greatly enjoy, the rest of it could fall off the planet, like rap, country, bubblegum pop and hiphop.

Well, I have to strike a balance because I can't write in complete silence but my music can't be obtrusive. SO I generally listen to ambient music which is, yes, dull as shit, but pretty and inoffensive. Or I just put a movie (that I've watched a thousand times) into the VCR and turn the volume low.

Anything more exciting than that and I can't concentrate.

Classical music . . . something that's present but doesn't cut into your thoughts. I like metal, but can't listen to it and write. Tori Amos is always fun, too.

A lot of u2, a lot of Counting Crows, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

At work (not that I write at work, of course), the classic rock station, because it's the only one I can tune in.

I am always listening to music. Not all of it matches the exact tone of what I'm writing, sometimes it's just whatever I'm currently obsessed with--but for fight scenes, I tend to choose goth/industrial and techno like VNV nation, Rob D, anything off the Mortal Combat soundtracks and Niktia soundtrack. For love scenes, something with lyrics--like Common Ro, John Mayer, Tori Amos. Fill in the rest with Evanesence, Boiled in Lead, and the Last Temptation of Christ score, and you'll get a good idea of what my musical inspirations are... While I was writing the j20 story, I listened to "Junkie's Gold" by holding mercury on continuous loop...

Hmm. For my sad scenes, Coldplay usually does the trick, especially 'For You' — my ultimate 'eloquence theme.' When writing urban scenes or international scenes, Sting's Brand New Day is helpful and any time I'm writing a happy morning scene/bouncy scene, "A Minor Incident" and "Something To Talk About" by Badly Drawn Boy are wonderful.

here's a good question.

i usually don't try to force myself into a certain mood to write, i just do. the music i listen to augments whatever i'm feeling at the particular time. punk mostly (i.e. bad religion, NoFX, Less Than Jake and the like, some techno, paul oakenfold, kimball collins and dj escape) i guess a good question would be, what inspires you? =)

I generally make up a playlist and write to it. For the current project, it's a lot of trip hop and grit and vaguely depressing songs. I rarely choose an anthem for specific scenes, though I've found Grieg can be awfully good to write to for sad scenes.

the one song that inspires me completely when I'm writing is "Teotihuacan" by Oasis

Right now, I've been listening to Yakko's World on repeat. It gets to the point where all the words blend together, it's just a jaunty tune, and the upbeat tempo keeps me moving forward.

Sometimes I'll listen to what ever is currently in my CD player. Other times, I'll have the TV on in the background. I also get inspired by listening to DVD commentaries while I write, but those usually end up as a distraction unless I've watched them a bazillion times before.

I usually just have the TV on too. But I get inspirations from Thunderstorm sounds (really!) and of course I have to mention my favorite KD Lang. She's not right for everyone but somehow her voice can raise my spirits or make me feel the pain inside. (depending on the song)

Like most of the people who posted already, I usually have a playlist. It often includes world music because that way I can listen to it but not get distracted by the lyrics. Lots of Qawwali, Turkish music, and a local band that consists of sitar and digaridoo instrumentals.

For the novel I'm currently writing,I've been listening to a lot of Godspeed You Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion for that funky apocalyptic feel. The fight scenes are all about Tom Waits and Johnny Cash.
