The phone conversation I just had with my dad:

Me: Oh, you have to watch Ugly Betty. You'd love that.
Dad: Okay. (pause) Why is she ugly?
Me: Because some people are just not pretty, Dad.
Dad: No, I mean, why is she ugly on purpose?
Me: She's not ugly on purpose. She just has bad hair and braces and bad clothes and meat on her bones. It's not like she's doing it on purpose.
Dad: *hesitant* ... okay.
Me: *headdesk*

I guess my brain isn't working because "But she's pretty on the INSIDE, that's the point" didn't occur to me until after I hung up. *sigh*

I'm guessing by "ugly on purpose" he may have meant something like what I thought when I first saw the ads for the show. Which was "Hey, look, they've taken gorgeous America Ferarra, slapped on braces, glasses and unflattering styling choices, so she can play someone 'ugly.' WTF???"

I do still need to get around to watching this show sometime...

I think it was more like he thought she'd dressed up like that to go work at a fashion mag and make a point. Which ... no, Dad, she's just normal-looking.

And, OMGYES. You totally should watch! ABC.com is even streaming all of the episodes of their website so you don't even have to download them. It's really soapy, campy fun and it's awesome. :)

Alas, it's suffering from "Val doesn't need another show to watch." :-/ I'll get around to it eventually, I'm sure.
