A quick "Heroes" ficlet ...
Feb. 21st, 2007 04:06 pm... about Mr. Bennet and baby Claire:
Sandra came back from the birthday party buzzing about it, beaming as she flitted from kitchen to living room and back again with Miss Boodle bounding happily at her heels.
"Oh, when they let me hold him," she sighs. The birthday girl is Polly, Sandra's best friend from high school, and two weeks ago she had her first baby. He'd seen the photos Sandra had taken, had smiled politely and thought the kid looked a lot like a monkey.
He doesn't have to have been there to know what Sandra's face must have looked like as Polly had handed over her baby.
"It's that new baby smell," Sandra says to him. "And he weighed absolutely nothing, just like a little bird or something."
"I'm sure he did," he says.
But he's not really sure until a week later when he takes the baby girl into his arms. She's not a newborn but there's still that scent hovering around her in a delicate cloud that should cover up the faint hint of smoke left behind on her tender skin. He holds her the wrong way, he thinks, sure he's putting his hand in the wrong place and her neck's about to snap clean in half. But she doesn't seem to care, cooing quietly as her tiny fingers clutch at his shirt.
She curls into him with a soft sigh that carries his heart with it.
He tightens his grip on her, gentle but sure, and dares the world to take her from him.

Date: 2007-02-21 09:28 pm (UTC)Poor Bennet... :( I know he's done some down right awful things, but I just get this feeling that he's just trying to protect Claire and his family.
And this certainly didn't help my mindset. :P Amazing, so sweet.

Date: 2007-02-21 09:48 pm (UTC)I love Mr. Bennet. I really do. He's trying to do what he thinks is best... it's just he has a "the end justifies the means" mindset that doesn't really work for things like this.
