I'm helping answer a question about the patterns of serial killers and when they kill and the only thing I haven't typed yet is, "If you tell me about this serial killer, I will tell you if he kills on weekends."

Why didn't I major in criminology in college again?

Oh, that's right, because I'm stupid.

*peers at you* I am suddenly burningly curious.

How DOES one tell if a serial killer kills on weekends? Like...what are the markers of such a thing? Can you also tell if he ONLY kills on weekends?

I am also not right in the head.

Well, like, let's say he lived with his elderly grandmother who only leaves the house for her weekend trips to Atlantic City. And the first few times he killed he had a close call or two at the crime scenes so now he just waits to bring his victims back to the little farmhouse they live in in the middle of nowhere, kills them in the garage or something, and then buries them under the dirt floor in the basement. Grandma's going away this Labor Day weekend to Atlantic City, so it's time for another murder.

It really depends on the guy. I mean, it's not like there's a certain category of serial killers who only kill on the weekends, but depending on certain outside factors and the killer's reasoning it might be expected that he'd kill on an upcoming three-day weekend.

These are brain cells I could be using on useful things, honest to God.

I believe

if I ever went back that's what I would major in. My kids will be writing stories or reports and they come asking me how do you do the perfect murder and I'm like well you have to have and it goes from there. My husband swears if he dies anytime soon he is leaving a note to make sure to check everything cause I probably killed him and got away with it. I really have no idea why he says such things.... honestly.

Criminology actually involves very little study of "sexy" crime. It's the study of crime in society, so it focuses on crimes far more common, and also looks at systemic bias, causation and cessation theories, media interactions, and public response (to name a few).

*Studied it in college. Taught it in grad school. Total dork.*

Have you ever thought about going back to school?

Heh. My sister is at college for forensic science and she has all these serial killer books (that i constantly steal, and in fact i have two of them now waiting for me to read for a project on H.H. Holmes)

and it wasnt until I said that I was considering profiling that she supported my decision to go into psychology/psychiatry.

Oh wow- people who share my love of profiling and criminology. I stole my dad's textbooks on the subject a few years back and have been collecting/coveting more ever since.

My thesis for my Masters is actually going to be about the sensationalism that surround serial killers and their crimes. It's really quite amazing how much we all love to hate them and how we can't keep from paying attention to them.

And I second the comment made above that most of the crime talked about in CJC is really rather boring.
