Well, I'm awake, so that's something.
May. 7th, 2007 10:27 amLost to end in 2010.
Three more seasons, forty-eight more episodes. Which ... you know, good for you Lost fans for that at least, I suppose. And I'm not even being sarcastic about that, because if I still liked the show at all I'd be thrilled that I could rest assured that my show would be on for the next three years and wasn't about to get dropped from the schedule like a hot potato.
Of course this also means another three years of dealing with Lost fans who, upon hearing that I don't watch anymore, spend an hour telling me every damn thing that's happening on the fucking island to try and get me to watch again because "it's getting really good right now!"
*groans*
Thank you, but no. It's not interesting. I hate to bring up the constant complaint that nothing gets answered, but that's not the problem. The problem is that the answers we get suck on toast. And sweet jumping Jesus dipped in chocolate, if *I* can't find a cohesive overall plotline that makes a lick of sense -- me, who can come up with a whacked-out conspiracy theory or cracked-out AU on the drop of a hat -- something is fucked up.
I loathe the implication, too, when I say I don't like what their idea of an overall storyline is and am told that I just don't understand it. Oh, I understand it. "It's a mystery! And they're not all dead! Oh, and there's no mystical element! Except now there is! Oh, wait, now there's a great planetwide conspiracy! And now it's mystical again, with psychics and stuff! Nevermind, it's a psychological execise! I'm sorry, it's mystical again! And remember that thing I said about them all not being dead? Scratch that, 'kay? Or maybe not."
I DON'T GET IT.
I will pay a million dollars to get some Lost fans to stop looking at me like an idiot when I say that and saying, "Well, obviously you just don't get it," like they're smarter than I am for hanging onto the show and seeing how the storyline plays out. And it's not all Lost fans, thank God. Most of you guys are great and don't hassle anybody who gave up a loooooong time ago. And if you still think it's great and want to finish out the series, knock yourself out. But for fuck's sake, stop treating me like an idiot because the storytelling makes me want to throttle the writing staff. If there's a deep and meaningful overlying plotline, it can't be found through the convoluted crap. When I'm watching a show thinking that one day I am going to miss the One Special Episode That Will Tie Everything Together and if I miss it I am so very very screwed, THAT'S NOT RIGHT. I just keep thinking about Clueless and Alicia Silverstone calling someone a Monet in that from far away they're okay but close-up they're a big mess and ... yeah.
And I still don't believe that the writers have had it planned out since day one, particularly with this new scheduled end for the series.

And there's a great post about abortion and the myth of the irresponsible woman here.
I really have never been able to wrap my brain around the cognitive dissonance involved in having the attitudes of "Babies are a special miraculous gift from God!" and "Women who get knocked up should be forced to carry the babies they get pregnant with!" Which ... really? Because that first one makes babies sound great and fabulous and that second one makes them sound like a nine-month prison sentence.

Date: 2007-05-07 04:13 pm (UTC)Toward the end of S1, I heard JJ had some other projects in the work and *every* *time* he goes to work on something else, whatever he's already working on goes tits up. Just wasn't interested enough to put up with *THAT* twice.

Date: 2007-05-07 08:21 pm (UTC)I get the impression Lost plays the same game.

Date: 2007-05-08 12:48 am (UTC)Yep. Lost does. I got irritated with it pretty quick and knowing JJ's penchant for plot twists that are AWESOME followed up by solutions that are NOT? *shudder* nooo thank you. And I find I don't miss it a bit.

Date: 2007-05-07 03:25 pm (UTC)2010?!?!?! Jeeeeeez. I was hoping that next season would be the last season as the number of reveals this season indicate that a conclusion could easily be made next season.... ALAS. LET'S STRETCH THE STORYLINE OUT. (cryyy.)

Date: 2007-05-07 03:47 pm (UTC)Then again, watching them would have ended with the same reaction out of me, so. *hands in air*

seriously though this new thing where people have all found their dead bodies and stuff and it is seeming as though they really ARE all dead? kinda irritates me because people have been saying that for ages and didnt thw writers say "no! no its not THAAAT, thats too EASY" AND YET. maybe i imagined that response.

Date: 2007-05-07 04:27 pm (UTC)Yes! For all the twisty, crazy stuff I'm willing to watch, for all the lengths I'll go to understand a plot that makes no sense, Lost killed me because it just didn't seem to make a lick of sense episode from episode.
I just had to give up on Lost. Yeah, I loved the first season and I tried to be forgiving about a lot of the missteps in the second season but there's only so much handwaving I can do before I've made myself dizzy with explaining away the plotholes. And the major issue of the fucking continuity because HOW MANY days have they been on the island? It's only still a few months, right? WHY do half of the flashbacks not jibe at ALL with characters as they currently stand?
Not to mention all the other questions that keep on cropping up and I don't have time to consult my scorecard of ZOMG IMPORTANT REVEALS! every time they throw us a new "twist" that contradicts a previously stated revelation.

Date: 2007-05-07 05:46 pm (UTC)Farscape is my favorite show ever and it was incredibly twisted (in all meanings of that word) yet the characters' motivations were incredibly consistent.
