Ga. judge: Keep Potter books in school

Oh, man, why did I read this story? Because I really do not think the guys standing in the lot outside my office window needed to hear me shriek, "Are you fucking retarded?!" over this:

At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."

Ma'am, are you deaf? Because it's pretty obvious that you are not listening to the words coming out your mouth.

IDIOT.

I think it is a violation of schools' responsibility to promote education and intelligence in youth to have people that stupid not laughed out of court.

Her opinion is her right, but how can you be that dumb and still have people listen?

This woman's obviously not paying much attention to school libraries, because when I was in school, our library kept a number of religious texts on hand (and this was a public school) for reference only. Furthermore, if she wants to ban HP because she imagines the witchcraft in it is anything like the witchcraft practiced in the real world, I'm afraid that C.S. Lewis would be next on the list, given his religious themes. In other words, she's wanky as hell and doesn't know what she's talking about.

*giggle* Oh, she's dumb. Please continue speaking, ma'am. It makes the rest of us look so much better by comparison. *nod*

So my first thought is that the logical (hahayeahright) extension of her argument is to ban any books that even mention any form of any kind of religion. You know, including, like, dictionaries, and encyclopedias, and anything with the word "God" in it, and anything that even mentions something vaguely religious in passing. There would be, like, one book left in the library.

And my second thought is to wonder if she's half intending to, once it gets firmly established that the HP books will be kept, turn around and argue "well since you're letting that in you should also let $foo in" for various values of $foo that include a lot of Christiancentric propaganda.

But that's probably giving her too much of a brain. *grin*

...wow, is she arguing two sides at once? "Religion can't be in school!...but I want God back in there!" What?

I suppose someone as stupid as that has to argue with herself, since no one else can really sink down to debate with her on her own intellectual level without inflicting some level of brain damage upon themselves.

Ooooh, man. Some people are just too stupid to live.

And yet, they keep on living.

Lovely. She's trying to exploit the system in any way possible to make sure that the only religion kids are exposed to is her religion. Whatever it takes.

Also, at what point do the Harry Potter books actually tackle the Wiccan religion? Because as far as I knew, it was kids on broomsticks with magic wands playing sports.

They don't. She hasn't actually read them; she claims to do so would be "hypocritical".

"I maybe need a whole new case from the ground up," Mallory said.

Really? Because I'm not sure I agree. I mean, this case was so logically grounded and so incredibly well put forth. Why on earth build a new one? Doesn't she have faith in her position?

At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."

Yes, but only her god. Religion, as practiced "by some people," must be banned from schools as a Constitutional violation (which it actually is not, by the by), but she's got this dream that God will be welcomed back into schools.

I'm sorry. It's just been so long since I've seen such a crock of shit that sarcasm can't help but float to the surface.

What would have been truly stupid is the GA judge agreeing to pull the book. As it is, Mallory's just a good bullseye.

by that logic, all fiction that even MENTIONS going to church need to be banned as well.
