Ga. judge: Keep Potter books in school
Oh, man, why did I read this story? Because I really do not think the guys standing in the lot outside my office window needed to hear me shriek, "Are you fucking retarded?!" over this:
At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.
"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."
Ma'am, are you deaf? Because it's pretty obvious that you are not listening to the words coming out your mouth.
IDIOT.

Date: 2007-05-29 06:10 pm (UTC)So my first thought is that the logical (hahayeahright) extension of her argument is to ban any books that even mention any form of any kind of religion. You know, including, like, dictionaries, and encyclopedias, and anything with the word "God" in it, and anything that even mentions something vaguely religious in passing. There would be, like, one book left in the library.
And my second thought is to wonder if she's half intending to, once it gets firmly established that the HP books will be kept, turn around and argue "well since you're letting that in you should also let $foo in" for various values of $foo that include a lot of Christiancentric propaganda.
But that's probably giving her too much of a brain. *grin*

Date: 2007-05-29 08:04 pm (UTC)Also, at what point do the Harry Potter books actually tackle the Wiccan religion? Because as far as I knew, it was kids on broomsticks with magic wands playing sports.

Date: 2007-05-30 12:29 am (UTC)Really? Because I'm not sure I agree. I mean, this case was so logically grounded and so incredibly well put forth. Why on earth build a new one? Doesn't she have faith in her position?

Yes, but only her god. Religion, as practiced "by some people," must be banned from schools as a Constitutional violation (which it actually is not, by the by), but she's got this dream that God will be welcomed back into schools.
I'm sorry. It's just been so long since I've seen such a crock of shit that sarcasm can't help but float to the surface.
