Why am I reading the IMDb boards for Knocked Up? First off, the post saying that Katherine Heigl's gotten fat compared to when she was fourteen made me want to install a "Punch An Idiot" button on my laptop.

A.) Women do tend to gain weight between the time they're fourteen and their twenties. It's called growing an ass and some breasts.
B.) I can't remember if Katie Heigl's a size six or a size eight, but as someone who hovers between both sizes, SHUT UP.

And then there's the posts saying this is a horror movie for women because they have to spend the rest of their lives tied to that fat dirty slob (not an exact quote, but I think I captured the general ambiance), that she should have just gotten an abortion (Movie's new running time: Twenty minutes), and my personal favorite -- that sex before marriage is WRONG. To which I say, "Dude, without sex before marriage some of us wouldn't be here." One particular parroting of that opinion also added that having babies out of wedlock should be less acceptable in society and ... again, if it were less acceptable some of us wouldn't be here. (Not that I'm saying everybody should run out and get knocked up, but seriously, if my grandparents hadn't been awesome beyond the telling of it when my mom got pregnant God only knows where the hell I'd be right now.)

I can only imagine how wanky the 40-Year-Old Virgin boards were when that came out, especially considering there was a comment on the Knocked Up boards that Steve Carell was obviously waiting for marriage in that movie. *eye roll*

Damn it, I need sleep and I can't because I've got this ridiculously annoying insomnia right now. I think the last time I slept was five o'clock yesterday. ARGH.

Sadly, the "reach through the screen and slap the idiot" option hasn't been invented yet.

Film sounds funny to me. My kid's out of marriage and I take the piss out of how he got here all the time. (My parents adore the fact that I'm not married. There's no one to interfere with them and their grandchild.)

We had the following convo the other night "Mum, were you a prostitute?"

...Okay, so to sum up, when people say "pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion," (because, reasonably, pro-choice groups don't want to come across as saying abortion is a tidy cheerful inconsequential form of birth control, but rather that it should be one of many options available to women) these folks think they're kinda wrong? I mean, I dunno. I had a kid well underway when I got married, so yes, I have been unmarried and pregnant, and I was somehow under the impression my having a choice meant I ...had a choice, and that ideally which one I made wouldn't be subject to the condemnation of the law or society at large. Crazy.

The thing I "love" about these complaints against unwed motherhood is that they take into account neither A) the fact that sometimes it really is better to be a single mother than to be shackled to this particular guy who just happened to have gotten her pregnant, B) the deliberately increasing difficulties in obtaining abortions (and emergency contraception) in this country and others, nor C) the fact that societal disapproval of unwed motherhood in prior centuries and decades didn't mean that there were no illegitimate children: Just that everyone felt free to treat the children like the dregs of society and their mothers as worse. And I am not liking any push back towards strengthening of the whore/madonna standard of womanhood that remains far too strong in this society to this day.
