So Kristen Bell's going to be on Heroes this season. Uh, thank you, but NO. I don't have a virulent hatred for her but I really just do not want to see her on Heroes. We're talking about someone who's had fans and critics falling all over her for three straight years telling her she's the be-all and end-all of hot young actresses and now she's going to be part of an ensemble show? Yeah, this'll work out.

And maybe it's just me, but I don't like the whole description of her character -- how she's connected to Peter's explosion and Mr. Bennet's past and Claire's future and also she's first seen committing a crime ... oh, but that might not be a bad thing! One sentence's worth of description down and it already smacks vaguely of Mary-Sueism to me. And also, don't we already have enough little blond girls who commit crimes on this show? Not that I don't like Claire and Niki (well, NOW I like Niki), but COME ON. How much you want to bet she dyes her hair?

Now, Nichelle Nichols? THAT'S Heroes casting I like. God knows George Takei's already awesomecakes.

In other news, the family friend who fixes computers is going to hook up my laptop for me tonight, since I tried for ten minutes before I was like, "You know what? I don't want to break this anymore than Compaq already has." And I still haven't written the bitchy letter to Compaq yet. I'll have to do that today.

I also have to go apply for a new job today. And considering the location is a place I used to work at, I might actually get it. Which sucks, because it's the same place I told my mother I'd rather sell a kidney than work at again. The difference is that rather than working in the factory itself I'm going to try to get an office job there. At least that should be good enough not to make me sick like working in the factory used to.

You know what might get me watching the show again? Richard Schiff, Mr. Toby Ziegler himself, is playing some kind of mentor to Mohinder. BRING IT, EXPOSITION BOY.

Well, I know we're getting a couple of new female characters, which is good, but on the other hand, when the photos of your main cast members feature only two women and both of them are blonde women, perhaps hiring another one is a bad move.

You know, I'm not sure how I feel about Kristin Bell yet, as I'm one of about three people on LJ who didn't really see any significant amount of VM. So, I don't know how good she is. I'm all for more female characters, though, so I'm choosing optimism for the moment.

She's not a bad actress, really. She's more like ... I want to say "spoiled". She's spent the past three years as the star of a critically-acclaimed cult TV show. I didn't understand the reasoning behind Lost trying to get her, either -- they're ensemble shows and she's been a damn good lead for three years now.

And I'm all for more female characters myself, but maybe someone who's not another pretty blonde? Or at least giving us more of the non-young-hot-blondes we've already got. (Janice? Heidi? Sandra? MAMA PETRELLI YES PLEASE.)

I can see this as being a good career move for KB, but I'm not really sure why Heroes or Lost want/wanted her so badly. This way she gets to stay right in the public eye on one of tv's hottest shows while she bides her time for the perfect starring role in some new tv show for next season or a movie. I won't mind seeing her, but it would have been nice to get a non-blonde on Heroes. *shrugs* Oh well, at least I know she's a mildly good actress so she won't ruin it or anything.

I have no feelings one way or another about KB herself - I never watched Veronica Mars - though superficially, at least, she pings my "bland blonde"-meter.

Most of my flist seems to think it's great, but I never really got into Veronica Mars, so I don't know...

See, I wouldn't be pinging on the Mary Sue thing quite so much if I didn't know damn well from experience with this show that for every connection to a character that they do tell us about with her there'll be another one they're keeping under wraps. Which, with that much detail, probably means she's connected to more people to Linderman.

Bell is one of very, very few actresses I'll forgive for being yet another blonde, especially on Heroes. And she doesn't sound like she has to be a Sue to me- the simple connection between all those storylines is that she works for the Company, which can make her either pure evil or somewhere in the middle of the moral spectrum.

As for the star factor- I realize Chris Eccleston isn't all that well-known in the U.S., but in the UK he's a big-time TV leading man and he fit into the ensemble just fine. Not that many people watched VM, in the end; Bell is in no position to swamp a big sophomore show like Heroes. (I'm far more frightened of the cults surrounding actors like Jason Dohring and James Marsters, myself.)

So I guess I'm still on the squee side of things, though you have good points about the ways this can go wrong- especially because I don't have enough faith in the Heroes writing team to rule out those things happening.

Having watched exactly one episode of VM some years ago, I've actually seen more of Kristen Bell as the character she played on a few eps of Deadwood (that being a con artist and happy killer posing as a sympathetic orphan), so I'm not really bothered by the news (aside from the one-more-blonde-woman aspect, of course). But I'm thrilled about Nichols and especially Schiffer.
