Instead I wandered over to Lackawanna College and picked up their admissions catalog.

Upon a nervous phone call in which I called my mom and said I was thinking of going back to school and she had to say something encouraging before I did something moronic like throw away the paperwork, she said if I found a way to pay for my classes, she'd pay for my books.

Okay ... um.

I AM NOT ALLOWED TO TALK MYSELF OUT OF IT.

And I realized on the way home that it is seriously not the school thing that's bothering me. I'm actually kind of excited at the thought of classes and homework and tests and papers, and I really do think that I can handle it around my job. It's the money. It's totally the money. This isn't like last time, where the loans and grants and whatnot were handled by my father and it was some distant thing I didn't even have to see. *I'M* taking care of it this time, and I think we all know how calmly and rationally I deal with anything remotely dealing with money.

But, yeah. I might be a college student again. Uh. *whimpers*

Yay, you! And, y'know, welcome to the club - I'm going to be almost thirty by the time I get my BA. Which is to say, I totally think you can do it - and that the money thing will work out. Though, yes, absolutely, SCARY.

Heh. That was why I called my mom for a pep talk -- she went back to school when she was in her forties. :)

Same here - i'm going to be 30-31 by the time I have my BA and it is only taking me 5 years it looks like while working full time.

The FAFSA and money thing is scary the first time, but seriously, after the first..maybe the second semester it becomes something you can do in your sleep.

Very scary but yay!!

That's AWESOME! You should really email/talk to Mona. She put herself through school and worked at the University for a long time, so I'm sure she could give you awesome financial aid advice. *nodsnods*

Oh, yeah, I am probably going to be all over her like white on rice. Probably would be right now if I weren't running out the door. :)

Oh, good for you! I'm really impressed - I'm not sure that I'd have the courage to go through with that sort of thing were I in your shoes. And I'm sure that you'll find some way to pay for your classes.

Yeah, it's tough, and yeah, it's scary, but to quote the awesomeness of Red Green, "I'm pullin' for ya; remember, we're all in this together."

Coming from someone who had struggle with going back to school all I have to say GOOD for you. It's hard and expensive but it does open up snew opportunities. Cliche sounding as it seems. And dude the money I feel you on that. But as a person who is broke all of the time, dollar pizza's are my friend, I'm glad I'm back. All this from my one day back at school. HA! Fill out falsa http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ because you never know and look up grants and stuff.

Finacial Aid! I don't know how it works where you live, but in Wisconsin I know once you turn 24 you get so much more financial aid because they stop factoring in your parents financial status. Unfortunately, I'm still 23 and my mother makes a lot of money so I'm taking out student loans, but one of my friends just turned 24 and she got $6,000 more than the tuition.

I wish I was 24 now and not next year.

My 28y/o ex-boss is heading back to school this semester. She says it's easier when you get older in that the government throws money at you for finally doing something with your life. Or something. :S She DOES live in California, though, so maybe the rules are different.

GOOD LUCK. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS WHEREVER YOU CAN.

My brother went back and finished school just this last year at 28. Most people just assumed he was the same age but looked older, so that wasn't an issue. Also, he wasn't working, so I am not exactly sure how he paid for it. My parents helped out a bit, but they're putting me to a private university right now so their finances are pretty stretched anyway. But.. if he can do it, you can too!!

Try not to worry too much about the money. Once you fill out the FAFSA a lot of it will fall into place by itself. Between the institutional fin aid and the federal loans, I got nearly $4,000 more than my tuition for grad school. Granted, you do have to go at least half-time to qualify for federal loans, but I think you can do it. I think it's great that you're doing this. Ten years from now you'll look back and think it was the best decision you ever made. So good luck!

I'm actually really, very excited for you. I just didn't comment till now because I was busy getting laid getting laid this weekend.

Once I get my financial shit together, going back to school is going to be an option for me, too. Hooray for older students!
