... but this link sums up in a really hilarious way my own ponderings as to when exactly would have been the right time for Dumbledore to reveal to one of his students the life-saving, vitally important information that he likes guys.

Yes, I had that same notion.

Because knowing Dumbledore is gay would've been one more weapon in Harry's arsenal against Voldemort.

Not to mention that not mentioning it in the book makes quite strongly the point that gay people are exactly like everybody else, and more importantly, are perfectly capable of behaving themselves appropriately around children.

It could conceivably have been slightly more explicit during the Deathly Hallows explication thing where him and wizard-hitler have a hot-torrid affair, I'm sorry, "good friendship". But then again, that probably wouldn't have worked terribly well.
