I've got four gigs to work with, and I've only filled one.

If you were in my position, and you were putting music onto the iPod of someone who listens to a lot of popular music and barely anything that doesn't make it onto top 40 radio, what would you absolutely HAVE to put on there? I'm trying to introduce her to bands and songs that are faaaabulous that she's probably never heard of. (I'm trying not to go TOO far out, though. I already threatened her with Indian dance music and she was like, "Yeah, I won't be listening to that." So I restrained myself to just one song. ;))

****

Oh, man, why have I not gone to sleep just yet?

Oh, right, because every channel is showing a marathon of something for New Year's. One of these days one of these channels will just show a marathon of marathon footage and I'll shriek, "Oh, man, this is my THESIS!", get up out of my butterfly chair, and collapse to the floor thanks to my atrophied calf muscles.

Have I mentioned that I am a golden god at this couch potato thing? 'Cause I totally am. Mmm-hmm.

Well, I'm into a lot of indie rock and lesser known bands, but I tend to like stuff that's still very melodic and not hard to listen to. Here are a few of my favorites. Lemme know if you want and upload of anything.

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife and Picaresque

The Rocket Summer - Hello, Good Friend

The Hush Sound - Like Vines

The Perishers - Victorious

Leigh Nash (vocalist for Sixpence None the Richer) - Blue on Blue

Over the Rhine - The Trumpet Child

Jeremy Fisher - Goodbye Blue Monday

Bill Ricchini - Tonight I Burn Brightly

Emerson Hart - Cigarettes and Gasoline

A Fine Frenzy - One Cell in the Sea

The Cure
Pet Shop Boys
Depeche Mode
Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash
CCR
Pat Benetar
Heart
Leonard Cohen
David Bowie

I'm sadly mainstream, but I would definitely insist on Belle and Sebastian (Tigermilk at the very least) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

A Bridge Too Far...Caine and Hackman in the same movie...this is my closing argument. I CAN STOP WATCHING TV! ::falls down:: PINS AND NEEDLES! PINS AND NEEDLES!

....sorry. I can't let any reference to PCU go uncommented. It's like a facial tic, but on the internet.

Oh god, yes! If someone else hadn't commented, I would have.

What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy.

I'm assuming she's 30ish or less so won't be familiar with some of the older stuff; and I'm avoiding anything hardcore metal:

Ich Bin Ein Auslander - Pop Will Eat Itself
The Guns of Brixton - The Clash
Shout 2000 - Disturbed
Battle of Evermore - Led Zepplin
Let It Be - The Beatles
Before I Forget - Slipknot
Wherever I May Roam - Mettalica
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolfe
The Wizard - Black Sabbath (not a typical Sabbath song)

I'm not good at guessing what's popular (I never listen to the radio). But somebody asked on [livejournal.com profile] topicless what you would put on a mix cd for a stranger, and this was my playlist. It's (mostly) music that pleased everyone on a 5 hour car trip including me, my brother the heavy metal snob, his girlfriend the country & pop music fan, and my mom, who has nearly every Barbara Streisand album there is. So it's kind of generically awesome. *g*

Blues Brothers - John the Revelator
Titiyo - Come Along With Me
Vanessa Carlton – Rinse
Marc Broussard - Home
Santa Esmerelda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Michael Jackson- Smooth Criminal
Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out for A Hero
Fall Out Boy - Dance Dance
The Gipsy Kings - Bamboleo
Kylie Minogue - Red Blooded Woman
Black Eyed Peas - Dum Diddly
Captain & Tenille - Love Will Keep Us Together
Placebo - 20th Century Boy
Muse vs. Britney Spears - Supermassive Black Hole vs. Do Something
America - Horse with No Name
Elton John - Rocketman
Beneath Augusta - Satellites
Kim Richey - A Place Called Home
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay
Afroman - Because I Got High

I can provide .m4as if you want any of those.

This is from a British point of view, so I don't know how mainstream these songs are in the USA.

The indie:
We Are Scientists - It's A Hit
The Arcade Fire - No Cars Go, Keep The Car Running and Rebellion (Lies)
Bright Eyes - Oh You Are The Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet And Hold The Earth In Place, Arc Of Time (Time Code) and Four Winds
The Darkness - Growing On Me

The oddball sorta electronica/dance:
The Knife - Heartbeats (I'm not sure if this one or the Jose Gonzalez version is the original, but this is so much cooler.)
Daft Punk - Digital Love
Basement Jaxx -

Not that we know each other or anything, but I would totally go with some classic musicals too. And Rufus Wainwright, definitely.

*randomly peeks out of lurking*

The Clash (I have the London Calling Album, and I am addicted to it, Lost in the Supermarket is fun and catchy while still less known.)

Rancid (cause I am a giant nerd for them, and well Radio is a fairly easy listening and awesome song.

Refused (New Noise for the awesomeness of both the song and the video)

Weakerthans - anything from Left and Leaving.

Everclear - Anything from So Much for the Afterglow, or... Heroin Girl or Santa Monica or... Romeo. Cause they are full of rock.
CCR for sure. Cause DUDE.

uhh.. Fugazi, Propagandhi, House of Pain... and like a ton more.. but there.. a smidgen.

Hellogoodbye - very catchy beats
Kate Nash
Blue Oyster Cult - I find the greatest hits works best for older bands with lots of albums.
Lily Allen
