that story both saddens and amuses me. i was once nearly fired from a school for telling a group of first graders what "gay" meant. they ASKED, and i thought it would be unfair and/or unreasonable to dodge the question...so i picked out a little boy who i knew had a girlfriend and i asked him what would happen if he wanted a boyfriend. he caught on quick. "then i'd be gay?" yup. i made a point of the reverse for the girls...and that was it. they decided it was no big deal, and i was delighted.

however, the next day there were phone calls to the principal from irate parents who wanted my job yanked because i had "told their kids about gay sex."

gah.
i really wish i'd had this LJ back when i worked at that place...

That is a truly inspired and cute way of telling them. Fuck those parents. I approve. You can teach MY kids, if I ever have any. Though they're probably know all that and far more by the time they're verbal. *G*

thanks--i thought of it on the fly.
i was surrounded by about twenty kindergarteners and first graders on a playground...and one of them was crying because another kid had called him "gay." i was trying to calm him down, when one kid admitted, "i don't even know what 'gay' means! hey ms. priest, what does it mean?"

and all eyes were on me.
*gulp*
and here i am, in the buckle of the south's Bible Belt.

all things considered, it could have gone much worse ;-)
