Hey! So, the Oscars, right?
Jan. 22nd, 2008 10:17 amAside from the fact that I think Keira Knightley's spot was robbed by somebody (I'm leaning towards Cate Blanchett right now, as much as I love her), most of the nominations make me very, very giddy. I mean, I'm not surprised by most of them -- I said each of the Best Picture nominees as they read them out loud, and I really think they should just give Javier Bardem and Daniel Day-Lewis their Oscars now and have it done with -- but I do love them a great deal. I still have to see Juno, but even so I'm rooting for Ellen Page for Best Actress because that would be an awesome surprise win. Marion Cotillard would be a fabulous win as well. (If you get a chance to see the movie, WATCH IT HOMIGOD. But don't go check out what she really looks like until after you've seen it -- the transformation is wonderful.)
Ugh. I miss the days when I'd already gone to see almost all of the nominees in the theater by now. *sigh*
In other movie-related news, I really hope I don't have to go to work this week, because I think I'm going to go through my DVD collection once again and figure out how to post them all on eBay or Amazon or something. Hmm.
EDIT: Aaaaand I'm laid off again this week. \o/
Also, I hadn't even noticed Hairspray didn't get nominated for any Oscars. Huh.

Date: 2008-01-22 03:21 pm (UTC)Other than Atonement, none of the Best Pictures nominees have even come to my area. I really want to see No Country for Old Men.

Date: 2008-01-22 04:27 pm (UTC)A lot of people would like to see Ruby Dee get it, but that's what people said about Lauren Bacall, and she ended up losing to Juliette Binoche. I really think it might be Amy Ryan--she won almost all the critics awards.

Date: 2008-01-23 06:50 am (UTC)I really hope she wins for Elizabeth! Bob Dylan looks awesome, and she's obviously done a brilliant job, but after getting passed over for the first Elizabeth movie, I really want to see her win this one. ^_^
However Keira is still immensly awesome! =D
Heh, I saw Hairspray yesterday. *Brain bleach.*

Date: 2008-01-23 08:16 am (UTC)Marion Cotillard and Julie Christie have the best chances at a win in that category, I'd say with Ellen Page in third if Hollywood feels like this is their chance to have a nice Oscar night surprise. Julie Christie won her Best Actress Oscar over forty years ago now, and Oscar loves stories like that, not to mention that she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. And Marion Cotillard won in the musical category there, and for good reason -- her performance as Edith Piaf is astounding, transformative, and total Oscar bait. Ellen Page might be a dark horse, though -- she's young, yes, but her performance is probably one of the ten best of last year and with the male acting categories virtual locks Oscar voters may want a pleasant surprise on awards night, especially if they actually get their awards show.
That leaves Cate and Laura Linney. On one hand, Laura Linney got the "happy to be nominated" nomination, in that she was an surprise and the voters may be content to let her have that. On the other hand, she's a well-respected actress who been nominated three times now for an Oscar and has yet to win, something even Cate Blanchett can't claim.
As for the supporting category, her chances improve considerably for two reasons -- a.) there's no clear front-runner and b.) if there were, it'd be her thanks to her Golden Globe win. The others are worthy opponents, though. Amy Ryan's picked up the most wins in that same category in other awards competitions this season, and she's a young newcomer -- the Oscars like giving this one to women like her. Saoirse Ronan have the disadvantage of being only thirteen, but the advantage of having given the best performance in a stellar epic. Tilda Swinton has a lot of respect in Hollywood, it was a great role, and this is her first nomination. On the other hand, it's also Ruby Dee's first nomination, which may lead to a lot of voters saying the same thing I did -- "Ruby Dee doesn't have an Oscar yet? WHY NOT?!"

Date: 2008-01-23 09:05 am (UTC)I just really want to see Cate win the Oscar for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Movie-wise it may not have attracted many people, but her acting is simply breath-taking. I dragged a friend to the movie who HATES anything Elizabethan, while I worship it (and Cate), and afterwards he conceded that while he still detests the Elizabethans, Cate was amazing. *Smirks.* Knew I'd win him over eventually. ;) There's also the fact that she was brilliant in the first one, and missed out then. And there's no way they'd make a THIRD one (like she would, heh) it'd be OVERKILL. But I'd still go see it mutiple times! =P
Keira Knightley is awesome. Can we give both her AND Cate the oscar? ^_^
