Dear place of employment,

If you're going to lay us off for another week, and according to Jess it's very likely, would you mind doing it sometime before the afternoon? I really don't feel like waiting to take a shower or going out to move my car until then so I can make sure I don't miss the call, and I'd like to go see Jumper this afternoon at the first showing rather than tonight when everybody and their date will be at the theater.

Sincerely,

Me

Dear Valentine's Day,

I'd like you better if you happened in the middle of the summer or in spring or something. I'm already depressed enough thanks to winter without, "Oh, and too bad you're lonely!" to add to the mix.

Sincerely,

Me

Dear friends list,

*hearts you all*

Sincerely,

Me

I don't really get how your job works. It sounds like they have you all more or less on standby, call you in when there's something to do and only pay you for the latter. Which sounds rather sucky to me.

Well, for most of the year we have a regular four-day-on, four-day-off schedule of twelve-hour shifts. Towards the end of the year right before Christmas it picks up and for a few months there's overtime all over the place, but for the first few months of the year we all tend to get laid off for two weeks here or there to make the work stretch out. By the time spring rolls around the layoffs are usually over, and since we can claim unemployment for layoffs and early closings, we still get paid.

I think you'll be ok with even a night showing of Jumper . . . that movie does not scream Valentine's Day to me.

I'm less worried about the people in the actual showing than the possible crowd in the lobby. It would be one thing if I were going to the really nice movie theater on the mountain but instead I've got a gift certificate to the one in the middle of Scranton across the street from the mall, which means it's probably going to be filled with a bunch of dopey teenagers.

Also, I don't like their popcorn. They don't put butter on it and it tastes like cardboard. No salt, either. Yuck.

i'm not legally allowed to hate on this day.

it's mom's birthday.

i already called her too, from work even (i'm such a good son).

the wife and I plan on having a thrilling evening of cleaning a bit and then martial arts (because being an enviornment where you are encouraged to hit each other is cathardic and helpfull)
