Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all. Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough. Oh, BRILLIANT. And this quote is lovely -- Another [Chinese blogger] said, "If foreigners found out, they'd think we can't even find a girl who is good at both." Bullshit. You want to know what this foreigner thinks? That the kid who really did sing really is cute, and that anybody who's so freaking worried about whether or not a nine-year-old female singer is pretty anyway needs to talk to a professional.
The new '90210' not going to be 'cheese fest' -- What are you talking about?! We WANT it to be a cheese fest! It's a 90210 on the CW, for God's sake!

Date: 2008-08-12 10:30 pm (UTC)I did sort of think that- I mean, there must be a little Chinese moppet out there with straight teeth and a decent enough singing voice for this. But mostly, my only response to this is a giant shrug because, well...that's showbiz. Look at the classic musical movies- dubbing everywhere. I think the real singer was a cutie, myself, but it's not exactly a shocker that shallow considerations came into play here.
