Me: So it's my birthday and I got cake, and some money, and six months of Netflix, and a gift certificate for groceries. I wonder if I'll get anything else.
Mother Nature: Oh, uh, hey. I almost forgot. I know, I know, it's a week early, but here ... have your period.
Me: ... you don't really get this whole gift-giving thing, do you?
Mother Nature: Yeah, I don't have a lot of girlfriends.
Me: Boy, I wonder why.
Mother Nature: It's a mystery.
Me: You couldn't just blow something up for me?
Mother Nature: Oh, shut up.

Is anybody else reading the Houses of Night series?

Okay, look, I like it. I do. But I also like Cheetos and Pepsi for breakfast. I like things that are not good for me. I know this already.

I bought the first book on a whim, and then I let Jess read it, and then her mom read it, and now all three of us are hopelessly addicted to the damn things but with the understanding that we all kind of want to either shake the Casts or Zoey within an inch of their lives. The one thing we can all agree on is that for the fifth book we're all going to make a drinking game of it and take a shot every time there's a mention of "an affinity for all five of the elements." We should be drunk by chapter three, I think.

But I'm in the middle of the fourth book and seriously, Zoey's got severe Mary Sue-itis when it comes to guys. Can she go through a book without having whichever vaguely attractive straight guy crosses her path fall for her? Please? At this point I almost wouldn't be surprised if Damien gave up the gay and declared they were soulmates.

Speaking of the gay, is it just me or does each book's attempts to state in some form or another, "Damien's gay and that's okay!" feel awkward and weird to anyone else? I mean, yes, great message and all, but still.

Oh, and the implication that past incestual abuse by her father may have influenced Neferet to hate all humans to the point of wanting to destroy mankind in all-out war? Um ... yeah.

I haven't read them yet, but my 12 year old is addicted to them. I deal because it is so much better than her going on and on about the Cullens and Twilight. :)

That being said, I know that I'll probably end up reading them.

Hey, there's been times in my life when My Friend showing up was the greatest gift of all!

Oh, hey, there's another one out?

Yeah, those books are driving me up a wall and yet I cannot. Stop. Reading them. I think the worst part for me is the refrain of "Christianity is bad! Wiccanism is good! But we're going to just barely call Christianity something different so we don't get nailed to a wall by angry parents!" Add to that the awkward attempts to shoehorn in that Damien's homosexuality is totally fine and it feels like the authors have issues on several levels.

Also, Kenny Chesney is a vampire. That will never stop being funny.

The fourth one came out on Tuesday, I think it was. And ... yeah. The shoehorn bit's almost literal at this point -- yes, Zoey, it's very ... uh, nice that this new boy (who's been giving you eyes since he walked into the room) said "Hi" to Damien and Jack instead of immediately beating him to death with a baseball bat and screaming "God hates fags!".

And yeah, the People of Faith stuff is just ... ugh.

I haven't read the books.

Child abuse, in any form (violent, psychological, or sexual) screws up people's worldview and psyche. I can see how extremely severe abuse could lead someone to hate everyone; particularly if when the person reached out for help; they were ignored, rebuffed, or failed in a major way.

Given that, If a person hated everyone and then somehow was granted incredible power (which I'm assuming Neferet has); it's conceivable (though unlikely) that they might try to destroy everyone.

Another thing to consider is that how many actual plausible reasons exist for someone (presumably born human) to want to destroy the human race? Anytime you have a villian who wants to wipe out the human race and not have them be completle alien in origin (elder evil, aliens, etc.) you're going to have to stretch a bit for a reason.

Happy Birthday, despite the period, and t-shirt asshattery...

Yay for groceries and NetFlix, as well.

Oh, those wacky vampyres.

You're right, it's like a banquet of Cheetos, Pepsi, and Twinkies. The People of Faith make me grumpy (I hate how her mom is spineless and in no way supportive of her), and the shoehorning in of the nun who blithely says that Nyx and the BVM are the same thing made me choke on my mocha at the bookstore. Damien's massive gay I don't mind terribly much, but his boyfriend's extremely effeminate behavior drives me up the wall, and the Twins are really starting to tick me off too. I honestly like Aphrodite more than any of her original friends at this point. And the constant referencing of the elements, and the random Cherokee phrases thrown in for good measure, and the never-ending pop culture references that are going to make the books dated and unreadable within a year...

They're fun reads, but essentially fluff. Fluff with fangs and big honking tattoos.

Oh, I don't mind Damien's massive gay myself, but the fact that Zoey's got to make a shocked but pleased comment in her head every time another male character doesn't respond to meeting him and realizing he's gay by beating him to death with a baseball bat and pleading gay panic is irritating as all hell.

I hate how her mom is spineless and in no way supportive of her

I have a feeling (mostly because the Casts seem to think YA means "as unsubtle as a sledgehammer blow") that the whole situation is going to end with her mom finally standing up to her stepdad and leaving him in the end, or -- more grotesquely -- the stepdad dying in the ensuing chaos and her mom getting her freedom that way.

the Twins are really starting to tick me off too.

Oh, good, somebody else who's getting tired of their self-centered bitchiness. When Aphrodite's beating them in the niceness department, that's not good.
