I'm exhausted and it's my first night of work. Oh, yay, another week of frustration as I try to make up for the fact that the other person working on my line is slower than molasses.
I do have two somewhat negative things to say about SPN stuff I spotted after last night's episode:
1. God, why are you doing the math with the timeline?! STOP THAT. I guess I've just been in the Terminator fandom too long, where dates don't match up and you're never sure how fucking old John is, so every time I see somebody in other fandoms going, "But wait, the dates don't match up ...," it's a lot like walking into a room and seeing a four-year-old about to push the On button on a power saw. I kinda want to just drag people away and be like, "Oh, no, honey, don't touch that, you'll just hurt yourself, it's not worth it."
2. Just because a female character can kick ass doesn't mean she's a Buffy ripoff. God, if I never have to see another female character who can physically defend herself denounced as a Buffy ripoff, it'll be too soon. If our only choices in fiction now are between women at the mercy of physically stronger characters or women who aren't and are therefore TOTES STOLEN FROM JOSS HOMIGOD!!!, I give up. I love Buffy, but ... no.

I picked up a really nice leatherbound quad-ruled journal at Target yesterday so that I could make notes over the next month for the stories I've narrowed it down to for NaNoWriMo. Right now, it's between the superhero gossip columnist (which should be easy to write if I sketch everything out and let myself be as snarky as I want) and the big gay demon fighters (which I started once but am completely restarting so a lot of it is already in my brain). I'm just really hoping I don't suddenly sprout another story idea between now and November and end up with something else to worry about.
As for the novels I'm currently attempting to work on, I think I may be able to finish chapter three of The Hollow Girl either today or tomorrow (probably tomorrow). I want to try to get another one finished and then go over the first few chapters another time before sending them off to the agent-shaped person for perusal. Then again, at the rate I'm going, I'll keep telling myself, "Oh, one more chapter, and THEN I'll send it off," until I've got the whole damn thing finished. Not that that would be a bad thing, per se, but still.
Still no movement on The Grand Prize Winner. I think I have to reread the finished chapters for a refresher course or something. Ugh.
I was also horribly tempted to pick up this at Target yesterday to replace my Fly pen. On one hand, it's more like the adult version of it and if you're using it to record notes during classes it'd come in handy. On the other hand, it apparently doesn't have translation programming yet, which is really what I want it for. And considering it's from the same company that makes the Fly pen and the Fly's translations to text files need translating themselves, I'm wondering just how well they'll work out anyway. Hmm.

Date: 2008-10-03 07:52 pm (UTC)Okay...people are actually drawing this parallel? Ruby in 3X01 I can see, because I think she was introduced *deliberately* intending us to think that.
Mary? NO. A whole world of NO. If nothing else, look at her fighting style! My teenager is a third degree black belt, and Mary looked *exactly* like a normal human being who is competent in martial arts after years of training and experience.
Buffy? Superhero...hello?
And character-wise...all you have to do is look at how much her personality parallels Dean. She is his mother. She is the mother we met in the Pilot, in Home, and in What Is and Never Should Be.
I really don't get it.
