I may just be cranky as hell because I could barely sleep last night and now I feel like I'm about five seconds away from vomiting. But I have the same reaction to the LJ layoffs that I did to my landlord raising my rent. Seriously, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I'm double-checking to make sure all of my posts are on both my LJ and JF but honestly, outside of that I'm not worried yet. I'll save my Muppet arms for when I try to access the site and I can't. And even then I probably won't just because ... well, I've been online so long whenever people start flocking away from whatever site I regularly use I just sorta shrug, pick up my hobo luggage, and head out on my merry way.

In other words:

Obama Pictures and McCain Pictures
see Sarah Palin pictures

(Note: I personally do not, in point of fact, "got this.")

my reaction was: everyone's freaking out because of something in valleywag? they make ontd look erudite.

(then my second reaction was: of course they're laying off the software engineers, they're the most expensive. they'll hire half of them back as either temps or contractors a month from now and save on benefits.)

Speaking as me and not someone who knows more than me (I volunteer, so this distinction is important; all I've heard is gossip until someone else says otherwise) there was buzz going around under locks and in private forums but nothing public; the Valley Wag was just something there with appalling inaccuracies but out in public and linkable.

I agree. Back up your posts if you can't lose them, keep your email address book up to date, watch for the next big thing. Fourteen years of OH NOES! and net drama take the edge off the panic.

It's painful, but not the end of the world.

When 2012 rolls around, then we can all start flailing.

(And making popcorn.)

I have a quick technical question: How do you cross post to JF and LJ at the same time? Do you use a client or do you do it by hand?

I had Semagic set up for posting to multiple journals before my computer crashed, which I really have to set up again. Right now I've got LJ Sec updating the stuff that hasn't made it to both to my JF back at my apartment. I really have to look up the Semagic instructions again - it came in handy so I didn't have to worry about losing anything kin an emergency.

Thanks! I need to get that sorted.

Exactly. But fandom HAS to freak out. It's fandom's way. :P

I don't see why SUP would have included all the new lj tech features if they were planning to killify the site. They're probably placing more emphasis on increasing revenue by boosting demand through shiny tech stuff while simultaneously cutting down costs by laying people off. It makes economic sense (though of course it sucks for the people who got fired).

In case I haven't said this enough, I adore you :D

There is really no reason to panic over a company laying off some employees in this economy. As I pointed out, the layoffs may help KEEP LJ afloat by cutting their overhead.

The main beef I have is the manner of their doing so. There are good ways and there are bad ways, and this was not quite as bad a bad way as possible, but... pretty harsh.

This is also a lot of the main clump of people who know it inside and out.

My personal two bellwethers are still here, but ... it will be a huge relief to me once Dreamwidth is up and running.

Yes. Thank the Lord for you.

I am really getting sick of the "OMG NOOOOOOES LJ IS DUN FOUR" posts all over.

Just chill everyone, wait and see what happens before you lose your collective shit.

Man, I fuckin' love that picture.

If my monitors at work weren't facing the rest of the office, I'd just have that tiled across all three. And whenever someone came to me and went "omg omg omg omg we need to do something RIGHT NOW" I'd just minimise everything and point angrily.

Also, really. They're a primarily Russian company, where software developers are cheap, and they're laying off people living in one of the most expensive cities? SHOCK HORROR.
