Spotted on Not Always Right ...

(I’m a painfully shy 13-year-old, and a customer somehow mistook me for an employee.)

Customer: “Can you help me find something?”

Me: “No.”

Customer: “NO?!”

Me: “No!”

Customer: “Why not?!”

Me: “… I’m not allowed to talk to strangers.”

I had kind of a similar experience only in the bad_service vein. When I was 13, I wanted to deposit a check my grandma had given me for my birthday, and the stupid teller kept demanding to see me ID, then claimed I was "being difficult" when I repeatedly said, "I don't have one!" and threw me out.

Yeah. I got to bring an angry mommy back with me.

We often have a similar problem where I work. We provide housing for a lot of homeless 16 year olds, but to register they need two forms of identification. They usually manage to get a copy of their birth certificates, but it can be a real trial to get something else. We recommend they register at the local library, which gives all its members a photo ID, but it can take up to a month to arrive.

One of the things that truly sucks about adulthood is that "I'm not allowed to talk to strangers" is usually not considered a valid excuse anymore. Alas.
