I have decided, thanks to the Project Runway reference and the cheesy Smith and Wesson aliases, that the PTB have been reading my fanfic. Shut up, I'm being delusional, let me soak in it a minute. *basks*

I'm not the least bit surprised that Dean was the stubborn one when it came to going off from the company and hunting. Remember way back when, in earlier seasons, when it was Sam who would have been the stubborn one? Now we've gotten to the point, especially since the beginning of this season, where the two of them have been torn to shreds in such elemental ways that they've swapped places. Even under the conditioning of scrubbed-down memories, they're still themselves, just with the serial numbers filed off.

I wouldn't expect Dean to come running back to hunting, not after last week, not even if that memory is hidden behind shutters. That kind of depression doesn't just shake off like water off a wet dog. That's why the scene at the end is a little bit hilarious, really, on some level. Zacharias telling Dean to buck up and do what he was meant to do is good. He needs that. I want to believe that Zacharias is not in with the war crowd, that he is a good guy. But man, he's shite at inspirational speeches, isn't he? And you know, it's tones like the one that hung over that entire conversation -- that comment about smelly humans; the "stop whining" crack which, yeah, that'll work -- that make me not trust him any more than I trust Uriel (or, to be fair, Castiel on some level - I don't trust anyone on this show, when it comes down to it). That's the thing about demons and angels - the demons on this show always sound as if they love humans (admittedly, if only for their availability to be fucked around with like toys), while the angels always sound sound less than thrilled to have anything to do with humans. The demons look like they're having fun. When the angels speak, they're that low-level of aggravated you hear from co-workers you think are going to shoot the place up. It's no wonder there's some weird rebellion going on with that attitude.

ANYWAY.

I don't see the "Stop whining" line as the end of things. I think we are going to see him go back to fighting for the cause next week and all that, and that's not a bad thing. But I think it's a lot like when something horrible goes down at your job -- say, a whole bunch of people get laid off on Friday or something -- and while you're going back into work on Monday, you're grateful for the job, and you actually kind of like it, you reserve the right to bitch about it, no matter what lousy pep talk the boss gave you. (Ahem.)

I love Dean, I love mopey!Dean, but we have five episodes left in the season. No more mopey!Dean. Time for skeevy!possibly evil!Sam.

I love how Sam's changing. Yeah, I said it. Hmph. I do, really. I love it no matter which way it goes at the end of the season -- whether he goes darkside or, in [livejournal.com profile] missyjack's words, if he ends up in the spandex. Admittedly, I do get off on Sam-with-powers, so hey, he can do whatever he wants as long as he keeps moving things with his mind and ripping demons out of people. But, still. I do agree with the angle that because there's been so much Dean this season, because so much of Sam's plotline has been playing offscreen, we're seeing his actions through Dean-tinted glasses. So now he's moved into a spot where trying to coax Dean into talking about his feelings means Dean revealing all kinds of wonderfully uncomfortable admissions like "I spent forty years in Hell, and all I got was this Torturers' Union ten-year anniversary watch for good service," making them both profoundly depressed and leading to things like Sam draining Ruby like a juice box. And thanks to the Dean-colored glasses -- they're green and gold with freckles! -- Sammy's keeping secrets, sneaking off with a demon, and generally being creepy.

The Sam we met four years ago is still there, though. The inquisitive one, the serious boy, the guy who feels obligated to help even when he doesn't know how he can. So's the same Dean. I was a little thrown by the whole manager position, but then I thought about it as someone who's worked in an office and oh, God, my boss at DHL? That was Dean. He could be charming as hell, he looked good, and while he had his moments of being crass he wasn't bad at his job. Dean's not stupid, but he gets far on being smooth in the right situation. And let's face it, he spent a lot of time during the episode when he was supposed to be working bullshitting. Heh. Yeah, that's Dean. And as for Sam ... well, I can't really picture him in an office, either, but if he were crammed into one? I could totally see him in IT.

I have nothing to say about the Ghostfacers other than that I loved seeing them again and that I only just realized that the same guy who plays Ed Zeddmore also plays Adam on CSI NY. I R SMRT. *headdesk*

In summation, DOUCHENOZZLES.

On a whim, I decided to watch SPN for the first time since....I think the fairytale episode was the last one I saw.

Mostly, I still don't like the way the show is going, for my own reasons.

But I totally fangirled Smart!Dean!

And I kinda wanted to know what whats-his-face said to Sam, *if* he said anything to Sam or if all that was simply for Dean's benefit. Which, fine, I'm all for more Dean, but...I still hold my S1 and S2 near and dear, but I'm just not feeling the love anymore...

Still love the smart!Dean.

....I missed the Project Runway reference, as well, but that could've been at some point where my laughing got in the way of dialogue.

And when you throw in the trailer for the next episode, they really ARE reading your fanfic. o_0

Yes, as you point out, they are both the same guys we met four years ago, they've grown and changed some as you would expect (and hope but tis so rare in TV). I thought this ep was a great way to have Dean re-engage with the mission. And i feel a nice reinforcement of Sam - what does he dream about here? Saving people and Dean. Thats what drives him.

And the UST between them in the elevator and apartment scenes was off the radar!
