Some of you may remember that one of my mother's cats, Riley, had a heart murmur. He was a sweet cat, not really a people cat but cuddly as all hell. When I was at the house at lunchtime, I was playing fetch with Wilson with one of those little toy mice and Riley came downstairs, not joining in but just watching from the steps, perfectly fine as far as I could tell.
My mom just called. A little bit ago, my dad was in the living room and heard Riley make a soft noise upstairs in the hallway. When my brother came out of his bedroom a split second later, he found Riley lying dead on the floor. The poor thing had a heart attack. IIRC, he was only three years old.
I just spent the last ten minutes calming my mom down on the phone, telling her that he was fine when I saw him, and God knows he had a happy life in that house, and at least he didn't suffer, and somehow by the end of the phone call I had her calm and quiet.
I need to go cry and hug my kitty now.

Date: 2009-03-30 11:42 pm (UTC)My beloved cat, Dodger, had a similar thing happen a about 3 years ago, where he was fine one minute, then we discovered him gone the next. Our vet said that there is a study here in New England going on, because cats suddenly dropping from a heart attack in the numbers that it has been happening is a fairly recent occurrence. He asked us a series of questions and sent the info in to that study. I haven't heard anything about it since then, but plan on asking my vet next time I bring a cat in for a check up.

Good that you were able to calm your mom down a bit at least.
And now I too am going to run off and hug my cats.
