-- 9 Silly Things About 'Star Trek' We Can't Help But Laugh At

-- 6 Kids Movies Wasted On Kids

-- Worst Summer Movie Tie-Ins HA! The Twilight dolls are on there.

-- Shanna Moakler quits as head of Miss California USA organization. Countdown to all of the anti-gay-marriage people who couldn't cry "Free speech!" fast enough for Carrie Prejean saying she should have shut the hell up and not brought politics into it or whatever in 3, 2 ...

-- Anybody need to see a baby animal to feel better?

-- Jezebel points out a major problem with The Princess and the Frog trailer ... namely that there's a major and majorly depressing spoiler in it. Ugh ... aren't we already having enough RaceFail right now?

-- An elementary school's chorus triumphs in a statewide competition a day after a major tragedy at the school. The video made me cry, and not just because I love that song.

-- Hey, I didn't know that Wanda Sykes's wife was pregnant! And she just had their twins on April 27. Aww.

-- Dude! Tilda Swinton showed up at Cannes looking amazing! And not in the normal way we would all describe Tilda Swinton's attire as amazing! I love her. They should totally make a movie about her, and her clothing choices, and her amusingly complicated love life.

-- [livejournal.com profile] apetslife! Horsies!

-- Who wants an orangutan kiss?

-- If you haven't already checked it out, the AfterElton Hot 100 for 2009 is up and there are lots of pretty boys on display.

-- Also, AfterElton interviewed Margie and Luke from TAR. It didn't get a mention on the show because Mel and Mike were being pushed as the gay team, but Luke's also gay. (Kisha is a lesbian, too, and according to Mel there were "rumors" about other contestants, with the most likely contestant being Victor. Not that I've seen anybody give a damn, but whatever, show.)

-- I've had this link lying around for a few days, but this article about David Cook becoming emotional during a concert not long after his brother passed away made me want to reach through the computer and give him a great big hug. Oh, honey.

-- Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton aren't coming back for the next season of OTH. Awww. Come over to SPN, Chad! We'll take you, you big douchenozzle.

-- And a few Cracked lists, Four Movie Presidents Who Would Never Get Reelected, 6 Movies Based on a True Story (That Are Also Full of Shit), and 6 Awful Hip Hop Slang Terms (That Are Way Older Than Rap).

CMM AS LUCIFER. If anything were ever worth starting a letter-writing campaign, dude. THAT IS MY CAUSE.

(Also - I'm glad that Prejean didn't get her crown taken away. The inevitable "omg the oppressive liberals are trying to silence the religious voice!" shit would've driven me CRAZY.)

Yeah, that's what's mostly keeping me from being irritated she didn't get it taken away, because excluding her answer, she earned the dismissal by lying about the photos and not showing up for pageant-related jobs. But not having to hear those whiners martyr the mindless dimwit is almost a present.

Oh crap, I hope I don't get into any wank or racefail drama about this, but... I'm inclined to believe that Disney is not doing any of these things on purpose. SPOILERS FOR MOVIE PLOT AFTER THIS SENTENCE --> I don't think they're turning her into a frog to hide her race, I think they're turning her into a frog because that makes for a character challenge and an interesting plot twist that expands a 10 minute fable into a movie.

The Maddy thing seemed innocuous to me, too, because apparently the creators wanted the name to be a nickname of Madeleine - a very common French/Cajun name. They seemed to be focused more on the New Orleans/jazz feel, from what I can tell. The fly is supposed to be Cajun, too. The fact that they changed her name seems to show that they are aware and willing to be sensitive to black audiences.

Meh! I hope it turns out well. I really miss the 2D classics.

I don't think they're doing it on purpose myself, but man, do they keep backing themselves into uncomfortable corners with this thing. I think they're trying really hard, and in trying really hard they're occasionally fumbling. And they've got a LOT of ways to fumble this.

That they're not doing it on purpose seems a lot more likely than a bunch of Disney writers sitting around going, "Heeeey, how about we turn her into a frog so we don't have to keep the black princess in the movie all THAT much?" So far, it's a lot more likely this is all dumb luck, as opposed to the Patricia Wrede RaceFail, which ... no, that's not dumb luck, that's "But writing fully-realized Native American characters is haaaaaaaard!"

I read the line,

I can't help but think that Disney would never hide a non-black princess away in animal form for a large part of a film – maybe because they never have.

...and couldn't help but think, "Well, Simba's princess Nala was African."

The comment section to that Star Trek article is like pedants run amok. It's amazing. I especially want to kiss the dude who said that the events of First Contact would still occur.
