So, yeah. Angel's going away. Boo. Stupid fucking WB.

Look, I was never a huge "Angel" fan. I watched it, and I followed it, but it was sort of like my "Highlander" infatuation in that I was hooked in spite of the fact that I was nearly always disgusted and filled with bitter loathing for the main character. I watched because Cordy did good snark, and Doyle turned out to be one of my favorite Buffyverse characters, and ooo, Wesley and Lorne and Lindsey and Lilah ...

But not Angel, because he was a dork.

And he wasn't even a fun dork. He was a depressed, angsting lump of forehead with hair that stuck straight up. I have to be the only person that actually liked it when Angel got silly. (Or at least it felt that way.) The Idiot Dance of A Gay Man's Taste in Clothes? I was there. Making goo-goo noises for baby Connor? I loved it. Angel's performing Barry Manilow? Genius! Clueless, giggling, beaming, Big Dumb Dork Angel ... that's my favorite Angel, bar none. Cast aside the heavy-handed, severely-in-need-of-anti-depressents Angel, and I was all over that action.

But things just got ... I don't know. Somewhere along the way, Joss lost me. He lost me so badly I wasn't even willing to come back for Spike. And I'd walk over molten glass to get a half-second peek at that man's cheekbones. It was the same way he lost me with "Buffy", which was the "Who can we torture this week?" form of writing. Culminating, of course, in the "Let's cause permanent damage to the audience!" stage, which resulted in the Cordy/Connor sex scene, a piece of television history for which ME owes thousands of dollars towards those burned retina operations.

To say the audience couldn't see the end coming is, well ... weird. I'm not saying that Buffyverse fans should have expected total cancellation, starting right now, but if I had a nickel for every post I've seen lately in which the phrases "puppet Angel" and "jump the shark" shared space, I'd have enough to buy the hair gel to send to the WB to say, "What the hell is wrong with you people?!"

'Cause quite frankly, as much as I wasn't a big fan, I don't want the Buffyverse to go away. I remember getting hooked on this show when it started when I was in college. I remember seeing Spike for the first time and thinking, "Ooo, gimme!" I remember crying during "The Gift" and when Joyce died and when Joss started to make the really bad story choices and pissed me the fuck off.

Even if I didn't want to go to Joss's California anymore, it was still nice to know it'd be out there. And now it won't be.

Oh, by the way, you want to get even more pissed? "Charmed" has another season coming up next year.

********

And also, 665 gay marriages takes place in San Francisco. Come on, San Fran gang ... one more wedding and we really frighten the hell out of the conversatives! And damn straight, I intended the pun!

EDIT: Oh, and if the entire world would stop apologizing for everything it does, I'd really appreciate it.

Goodbye Angel :(
You didn't have half the ratings you deserved, and we watched less than half your episodes half as often as you deserved.
