The last time I checked my voicemail messages was on Friday. I had three calls from telemarketers which I trashed, but nothing else. Friday, if you'll recall, was the 28th.

I just checked my voicemail again.

Three messages have magically shown up from before the 28th. Two of them are telemarketing calls. The other is from that place I really, really wanted to work, saying the only thing they had for me was a temporary position but they wanted me to come in for the following Monday. When was the message left on my voicemail?

THE FUCKING 11TH.

Excuse me, I have to go drink copious amounts of alcohol now.

I would so be calling your voicemail provider and raising all kinds of foul-mouthed HELL at this point.

Yeeeaaaah. My mom works for the voicemail provider.

I don't think she was amused to hear about it, either.

Your mom might not be able to say something about it (because of company rules), but that doesn't bar you from going in and raising hell as a customer. My dad and I work for the same company in different towns, but we actually encourage each other to report violations and customer service issues as customers, because many people think if you're affiliated with the company in whatever way, the service can slide a bit. NOT SO. And if you don't say something, it just keeps going on.

Meanwhile, here's a slab of cheesecake and a beer. :)

"Hi, [Place I Want to Work]! I've been in the process of changing my voicemail provider and much to my chagrin, they didn't forward me your message from the 11th until Friday the 28th. Since most companies seem to be ignoring rejected candidates rather than sending rejection letters, I assumed I had been rejected. I'm so sorry I didn't get the message, or I would absolutely have shown up on that Monday. Is the position still open? Would you be willing to give me another chance?"

Can't hurt. If it doesn't work, you're still back where you are already.

This.

(And this is also part of why I hate that companies / interviewers can't even be arsed to send form rejections.)

I've only ever gotten a rejection letter from a company I've applied to work for once in fifteen years of employment, and that was for the factory position I tried to get two months ago. Every other job hasn't bothered.

I just got a rejection letter last week.

For a job I applied for in March, 2008.

I don't understand it, either.

Absolutely agreed. At least get yourself back in good with the people offering the job; if they have temp work then, they may later on as well. Explain the screwup (and, [livejournal.com profile] insidian I like the way you're spinning that!) and good luck to you.

Oh, holy crap.

That is...wow, yeah.

Definitely do what some folks above said. Hopefully they'll let you in, still. There's always temp positions available!

Is it Verizon? Same thing happened to me last week. My friend's mother died and I missed the wake and funeral because I didn't get the voicemail until 3 days later. RAGE.

Wow. My Verizon voice mail screw-up story does have NEARLY such a ragifying ending...

My phone's real bad about not ringing for calls (especially if I'm in a crappy coverage area, like the one I live in), but usually fairly prompt about the missed-call beep or possibly a text message. But, yeah, I've had some interesting delays in the past that have caused some issues. Never one that took several weeks to arrive, though.

That happened to me once. My husband picked me up after work, and said, "I have good news and bad news."

Me: Good news first.
Him: Publishing Company called, and they want you to come in for an interview.
Me: OMG, really? I sent in my resume cold, but I really really wanted to work there! I thought I'd never hear back from them. Yay!
Him: Now the bad news.
Me: Nothing can bring me down.
Him: Our voicemail has apparently been eating our messages for three weeks and decided to cough them all up today. The message is from three weeks ago.
Me: *is dead*

In the end, I called them back, apologized and explained, went in for the interview, and...didn't get the job.

But it was the worst feeling ever.
