The phone just rang and I freaked out because who the hell would be calling me after nine on a Sunday?

Turns out it was my brother, calling to flail about Trinity killing Rita on Dexter. (I don't have Showtime, but I've been spoiling myself on the fourth season.) It was basically five minutes of him saying HO SHIT HO SHIIIIIIIIT and me giggling hysterically at him.

And then at one point he said something like, "Boy, I'd hate to be the people writing the next season," and I was kinda like, "... you didn't ask before you borrowed my brain, you tool." Heh. :D

I just finished the episode. Right at the end, I flipped the fuck out.

I was upset about her dying but now I'm way more curious to see how Dexter will respond to it.

I will say that this season redeemed most of the things that made me unhappy with season three.

I've seen way too many horror/thriller movies & read too many books because my first thought was 'oh hell, she's dead in the house and he doesn't even know it yet'. Then I was torn between being horrified at the situation and all excited because I was right. heh

WTF!? They killed Dex's woman?
....

Ho shit indeed....*runs for cover*

I wonder if this is where they bring some of the other Dexter book canon characterizations into play...*shivers and hides again*

And one of the really interesting things about it is that by the time he found out about it, he'd already killed and disposed of her murderer, so he's completely unable to take further vengeance. He's got to deal with it without even being able to resort to his usual methods of exorcising frustrations -- just tormenting himself over all the time he wasted when he should have killed Trinity early on.

Of course, it still amounts to shoving Rita in the refrigerator because the writers couldn't think of anything more interesting to do with her character. But at least the writers can't resort to the bog-standard bereaved-hero-seeks-bloody-revenge storyline.

Not that Dex can actually be bereaved really, which is the other kinky twist on the whole thing...*tilts head* Gah, I gotta get caught up...*headdesk*

Well, see, that's one of the interesting notes to the series (the TV version, at least -- though I went ahead and bought the four books in my post-Xmas Amazon order, so I can reread the first two and read the latter two for the first time): It is strongly implied that some of Dexter's emotional problems may well have been overstated by Harry. Harry had a whole slew of issues of his own that led to his training his foster son to be the Dark Avenger, and some of what he was telling Dexter and himself about Dexter's utter inability to function in society and maintain quasi-normal relationships with other people has been shown to be less than entirely true, first with Debra and then this season in particular with Rita and the kids.

I had to explain to Mom last night, how there've been so many anvils dropped this season about Quinn being "deeply suspicious" of Dexter (which is to say, holding a grudge and looking for any dirt he can find), that the next season's plot is probably going to heavily draw on the facts that A) the spouse is generally the first suspect the cops look at, B) he has no alibi, since he can't exactly admit he was stalking and ambushing Trinity while Rita was being killed, and C) Rita is far enough outside Trinity's pattern that (without being able to explain to the investigators why Trinity had a special hate-on for Dexter) it's going to look like a copy-cat killing that someone was trying to blame on Trinity.

So, yeah. Also I need to get around to rereading the Dexter books that I haven't read since right after the first season aired (and catching up on the one(s) I never read at all), the more so since in the books Debra learned about Dexter's extracurricular activities at the end of the first book and if the show is starting to tiptoe towards her being aware of Dexter's secret life I'd like a sense of what they might be able to do with that.
